Hi,

I'm a Life Scout, and I'm going to be starting on my Eagle Scout project soon. I know what I want to do. What I plan on doing is to send packages to the soldiers deployed. I've read other stories about people doiing the same thing. Problem is though it wants some signature from the organization, group, etc I'm benefitting. Since I plan on sending serveral different people packages, it doesn't make sense and also, I'm not benefitting on particular group of people.

So, how would I find a loop hole around this?

Thanks for reading, and please don't respond if you want to just harass me for trying to be a good person and in a good organization.

Check with your local american legion if you have one. Most american legions support the troops and their families in various ways they even have members that volunteer their time around the community on different projects. Talk to the commander and tell them what you want to do they may already have a project like yours in the works and let them know that you are willing to help and maybe even expand on what they are currently doing for our service members overseas. And this way if you do Complete your eagle scout project with the help of them the commander of the post could be used for a signature on what you did

Hello VelcroChicken:

In agreement with other posters, Madkins007 also has good points about checking with your SM and Eagle coordinator. Sending care packages is a great idea. You may need to coordinate this through another agency, however. For security reasons, the government prefers that packages are sent to a specific unit and/or individual, rather than to "any soldier."

Have you considered sending care packages to the citizens of the Iraq communities in which our soldiers are stationed? A small gesture like this may show a group that the people in the US do care about their welfare too.

Keep on Scoutin'

Where are you getting the names and addresses from?

Just putting together a few boxes of supplies and sending them over would not count in my troop as an Eagle Project- it would have to be a lot bigger in scale and involve more people to coordinate- if you don't show leadership it is NOT an Eagle-level project.

A big scale deployment would have to include other people- vendors and such for supplies, people to help pack and address the kits, etc,

It would make a lot more sense if you did this with the assistance of a military aid group of some sort that can help you figure out what to put in the kits, what is and is not allowed, how ot pack things, how to get soldier info, etc.

Then- the group serves as your sign-off requirement.

No matter what any of us say, however, you NEED to get this discussed with your Scoutmaster and/or Eagle chairperson soon! THEY will have the best answers for you.

I would definitely check with the American Legion or Veterans of Foreign Wars. They can steer you in the right direction. Another group which would be happy to help you out is a Rotary Club or Ruritan Club. You might even inspire them to send some packages or help you pay for the ones you're sending. (Postage can be expensive!) Any of them would be pleased to sign off on your work. Otherwise, you can hope to get a thank you note, which will have a signature on it....it's possible your leader will accept that. Good luck to you!
