Brainwashing.
If we banned the religious indoctrination of children, you would see the theist population plummet in just a generation or two.

Religious belief is an addiction just as powerful as any drug.
The unfortunate thing is that many people are indoctrinated from early childhood which is why most people have the same religion as their parents and peer pressure makes it impossible to break free and rehabilitate themselves.
Otherwise intelligent people hold beliefs about life that they would never apply to other aspects of existence.
They will pray for a sick person to get better but when they are ill themselves they go to see a doctor to have the benefit of his scientific training.

You have to be careful with that number. When I went to church, I pretty much figured everybody was likely as not going to be in salesman mode (assuming they sold something for a living - which, let's face it, everybody's selling something). Church is good ground for planting the seeds of a good relation that leads to a sale. See, some people don't really care for all the dogma or politics you see swirling around there, they just want to drum up business for the tire shop or the insurance office.

as the song says, "you're gonna have to serve somebody"
Belief in no god, or belief in a god, only answers the basic question of who/what is your highest authority. Do you submit to other humans for your moral code, to yourself, to government & rule of law, or to a belief structure based upon a deity?
One question though, which hypothesis (since theory is actually incorrect) of evolution do you believe has provided sufficient ground for the eradication of deity?
Both sides in the debate have engaged in unethical behaviors, and violated scientific principles. However most people only rail against the "theist/deist" camp. Please consider the following lies and purposed falsifications engaged in by those who seek to "prove" evolution.
Both sides need to develop some honesty & integrity to their methods, and to present each others views in a fair and balanced manner.

If only more people had the obvious common sense you have the world would be a much nicer place. Unfortunately, most people (75% of America) are suffering from herd mentality and the after effects of a lifetime of brainwashing. Religion and the religious are the greatest enemies of truth, justice, and decent morals and ethics. I'm sick of ignorant fools who justify what they believe to be the truth simply because "it says in the bible." I wish they had more intelligence and courage. They are sheep. But, the wolves are seriously outnumbered.

I guess you're the minority. P.S. not all people that believe in creation, believe the earth is 6000 yrs. old. I subscribe to evolution and the big bang theory, you talk as if "evolution" debunks the existense of a creator...lol. open your mind.

It's mostly due to the indoctrination of children, which is without a doubt the biggest threat to religious freedom in the world today.

I'm so sorry about the way you feel, but GOD definitely exists. He's evident in everything around us. I agree with one of the other Yahoo Users when they said they wish there was more like 99% Americans who believed in God. Actually - I wish it could be 100% of the world! Please, please read the Bible, don't just take our word for it. God does exist, and He loves you, and wants to save you from eternal damnation. Take care and may God bless you!
John 3:16 - For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
