First, why would you saw off a rifle? That seems a littel pointless. If you cut it wrong, yes it will backfire.

The only reason it would backfire is if you decreased the diameter of the hole in the process.. or left a huge burr from the cutting. Don't over torque your vise and make sure the barrel is clear before firing. Don't use any kind of impact cutting devise.. just a hacksaw. Don't cut it shorter than 16 inches, as you can go to prison.

If it is a gas operated semi-auto and you cut it before the gas port, it will not work properly. LOL
However, shortening a barrel if done correctly will not cause any kind of problem with how the gun fires. What may happen is if you use a slow burning powder it will not all burn before the bullet exits the barrel. Then you will get burning powder coming out of the barrel and get a pretty good flash at night. You will also get lower muzzle velocities so range will be reduced.

Why would you want to saw it off? It would have to be re-crowned, etc. I suggest you take it to a reputable gunsmith. Also, there are legal ramifications you need to be aware of. You can't cut it shorter than a certain length. Check your local state and federal laws first.
