L. Ron Hubbard (Science-fiction writer, and the founder of Scientology.)
The exact quote was, "Writing for a penny a word is ridiculous. If a man really wants to make a million dollars, the best way would be to start his own religion."

L. Ron Hubbard said this quote in 1954: "The way to make money is to start your own religion." He was the founder of Scientology, which you can learn about here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scientology Here is more info on its founder: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/L._Ron_Hubbard

"I don't think any religion makes any sense and I think people who are into that are really getting duped, and I don't think Judaism makes any more sense than Christianity, and I don't think Christianity makes any more sense than Scientology. But here’s a guy, L. Ron Hubbard, who told all his friends, "Look, I'm gonna start a religion, 'cause I can't make any money as a science fiction writer." [Laughter] I mean, he admitted that publicly! At least with Jesus Christ, you can't go talk to the guy."

Probably Joseph Smith, (Mormon)
Charlie Russell, (Jehovah Witness),
or Sun Yung Moon, (Universal Church cult).
This will stir up a hornet's nest,
but the first two at least for a fact were
failed fortune-hunters when they started
their own religions,
(perhaps Moon was as well).
Those guys even had their own "bibles"
printed up to go along with their new "religion."
(As for me, I don't believe in religion...
I have a one-on-one relationship with
Jesus, Who is my best friend)

Was it Jim Bakker or Jimmy Swaggart? Oh I see from the other answers it wasn't, they just followed Hubbard's advice.
