Good question. I can't tell how serious Brian P. is, but part of his answer is right on. Separation from God on Earth was the big punishment handed out by God. Pain of childbirth, hard work, wild animals, and exclusion from paradise were all far less drastic of punishments. Since we have never experienced the joy of God on earth in our lifetime, it is easy to get hung up on the 2nd and 3rd "worst" punishments.
Those are just my thoughts.

You would think that the question for each was an individual responsibility question (if you take the story seriously): Did you eat the fruit?
For each the answer was yes, so for each you would expect the same punishment. Yet both are sentenced to lifetimes of work, to death, etc. but only the woman has pain during the process of making a baby- the man has only pleasure. Only enmity between women and snakes is mentioned (a very bizarre difference, since women and snakes seem to have no more difficulty than men and snakes.) The unequal treatment does seem unfair. And why pain in childbirth? What a strange way to punish Eve specially. It's almost like evolution has given us pelvic configurations well suited for our ancestors but unsuited for giving birth the way we do and someone was trying to come up with a religious way of explaining it through myth.

Eve and Adam were given equal punishment. Adam, before he sinned, had worked. But after he sinned, God said that work would no longer be easy for him to do.(Genesis 3:17-19) Eve was also working, as Adam's helper.(Genesis 2:20)
If you'll notice, God said that Eve's pregnancy pains would be increased as a consequence of her sin.(Genesis 3:16)So,had she already had a child, she would have experienced some pain from it.

firs of all, Women ARE supernatural.
Second? Guys can get kicked in the ...place , even when not bearing child and it hurts.
Third! They BOTH got kiked out of paradise, which was the REAL reason all the pain and suffering of all sort apparated.
D! ! God didn't create society, He let it happen. Go to the Amazon people and see if their women are cashiers. The organization of society being blamed as morphing gods punishment is like saying me punching a girl is divine punishment. What men do is not God's. Men created society etc.
And FFfive! Even back in the day, women had to work. They didn't just sit around. But they didn't get hired as politicians or cashiers just yet.
plus girls get to be afraid of snakes until somewhere around 2003 AD ( I think, but my mom seems to be an exception to this divine empartment)

Adam was told by God not to eat the fruit. It was his responsibility to pass that knowledge on to Eve. They should have responded the same way Jesus did to temptation and used the word of God. He knew and still allowed them to make a mistake but sent His son to die for our sins to be able to correct what had happened.

Even animals have pain during child bearing so does that mean that the female animal was tempted by a supernatural being too? It's all just a story to try to explain the natural.

I can't speak for God but Eve was the first to disobey God and she involved Adam compounding the problem.
Whether she was tempted by Satan or not, Satan had no power over Adam or Eve so when they chose to sin it was on their shoulders because they could have chose not to sin.

the fact that women work in this day and age is not Gods punishment on women. We choose to work. That is the way we chose to have it not God.

The idea of "original sin" doesn't really make any sense and is offensive to women.
