It is the low option, lighter version of the Mustang with the GT engine, tranny, rearend and suspension. In 87/88, they had all manual seats. 87-93 had a rear spioler if hatchback and no ground effects. The LX was a couple of hundred pounds lighter than a GT. In 89, I believe the LX got the heavier power seats, but all 89 5.0's got Mass-Air so mods can be made and it will still run and idle correctly. 89 also got the 140 speedo, where as 87-88 had 85mph speedo's.

also the lx was the only way to get the 5.0 powertrain in a notch back or trunck version,which has better weight distribution than the hatchback

It's lighter than the gt model and has just as much power.

its what we call a sleeper, you could order them like that in those days. as already said, its just lighter with all the power
