I admit it does irk me that they do it just because it makes things worse for the rest of us. But its just so ridiculous sometimes

Oh Their God!!! This is news to me. The mocking never ends. Rubber Athame???? Now that is funny. Yet, I imagine, for those who are seriously interested will see the folly in these things and get real. Makes me extremely grateful that the 'newbies' around me ask what books to buy! Thank Goddess. And thank you for the good laugh.
Blessed Be

Meh. It's more sad really, and I mean in a pitiful way. But... I am mostly indifferent because the only people that pick up those types of kits are the fluffy bunnies that we never have to worry about doing anything actually important.

By the way Paganism For Dummies is a good book. It is not a witchcraft made easy book, it's a short (relatively at least) exploration of the background and different branches of Neo-Paganism.

I have always been amused by the Teen Witch Kit with the rubber athame. Silver Ravenwolf has her name on it, but she did not even create or write anything that is in it, they just put her name on it because it would sell. I know Silver personally, and honestly I cannot stand the woman. There was a point that she told some of her people they were not allowed to go to a gathering because we were going to be there lol.

On the other hand, if some idiot wanted to pay be a few hundred dollars for a love spell, heck I'll throw something cheesey together to give them with a big label that says "no refunds" haha

The instant altars I have always found a little funny, wondering if anyone actually takes them seriously. I used to sell altar kits on my website, but they were actually decent kits of basic tools. Sadly enough, Wicca for Dummies is not a bad book compared to a lot of things out there. If you REALLY want to cringe, check out Love Magic by Sirona Knight.

Some of the Dummies and Idiots guides aren't that bad. For example Shannon Turlington's "The Complete Idiot's Guide to Voodoo" is excellent. I think a lot of pagans judge these books by their covers in order to seem more educated.

That being said, I do think the recent rash of spell kits and related boxes is rather silly. I managed to find the animal totem equivalent of the spell kit; you can read the full review I did at http://lupabitch.wordpress.com/2007/01/05/animal-powers-meditation-kit-farber-and-zerner/

There actually IS a "Wicca for Dummies" book. Look on eBay and you'll find all kinds of kits like you describe, and "magickal" things that are supposed to bring you luck and love . . . but it's typical of a society that doesn't want to do the hard work of anything, wants the quick and easy fix. The fast food generation.

OMGS!!!! You have NO idea!!!! I live within driving distance of Salem, MA, and every single time I have to go to the shops to pick up some supplies, like herbals, I look around and just cringe at some of the ludicrous stuff these places have for the fluffy bunnies and tourists!!! Don't get me wrong, I understand that Salem caters to the tourist trade and all that, but for those of us that are real, normal people who just happen to be Wiccan/Pagan, the fact that there are people who would actually buy some of that "Instant Spells!" crap just gets me every time.

not so much hilarious as sad. these things miss the whole point of spiritual magic, which is that with understanding and clear intent, you can effect change. they're bad for the serious practitioner because they perpetuate stereotypes, and they deflect the curious from genuine spirituality.

on the other hand, the fad that spawned that nonsense has brought a lot of dedicated people into our local community by helping us be more visible and taking us more seriously.

[hanging head] i own a copy of paganism for dummies. i found it to be a sensitive overview, but overall not very helpful.

Nature has been going through some huge changes lately, you don't see how these changes can affect everyone.... did you know that Wicca evolved through these constant changes, and where nature is today, she might be laughing at some of the Wicca ritual, being that they developed without guidance... the world is changing around us... all those things that the christians have been preaching about the devil having a veil over the eyes of humanity and such has truth to it... that many of the secrets of nature that traditionally is to be passed down to humans through spiritual means will be returning.... the church use to swallow them up and try to work it out for themselves that's why the bible doesn't make sense... anyway when the truth is know the people that are greatly deceived by this evil force will prove to be the christians.... I heard mother nature say that when words of advice are spoken the advice is for the one speaking them.... so beware you are being deceived comes from the christians who should be listening to themselves... anyway... I'm inviting anyone wanting to participate in this sharing of new information to join me at..... http://groups.yahoo.com/group/gypsys_emporium/

We are all meant to work together with nature and share what we have learned while we were without guidance....

Not sure I qualify as a pagan -I'm an agnostic mootheistic witch - but I think it's kinda sad. I mean, they are misrepresenting a religion and building false hopes. Although I did think it would be fun to use one of those money-draw kits to clear out the crazies in a bingo hall...

Goddess be with me, aren't they awful????? They are worse than that, they are downright insulting and dangerous because they misinform the general public about what a Witch can and cannot do. They are as annoying to me as the spread of misinformation in Harry Potter stories.
