This "nursery rhyme" like many, were simple spells that turned into superstitions and then into a thing for childrens' entertainment. Jack began as a spell that brought luck if the flame did not flutter or die or Bad luck if the flame was blown out, or the child smashed into it . In celebrations of a new year grown men jumped over large bonfires in an earlier period and the children imitated them first with a small fire and latter when people became urban over a candle.
