My aunt made some medicine for me. It is basically some hometown dirt cooked for an hour and sifted. It's to be sprinkled into water to prevent indigestion when traveling. Is this against some kind of travel or customs regulation that I'm not aware of? I think I remember that dirt is off limits if it isn't sterilized, but this is cooked for a whole hour to make a very sterile medicine.

Normally you can't bring dirt into the US because of the possibility of pests or insects. But since your dirt is sterilized it probably would be legal, but you would have to have proof. I think if you tried to explain the dirt using the explanation you used above, you may be detained and possibly commited to some kind of institution or another. If you're going to bring the dirt it may be best to eat it all before you land. Couldn't you just use an over the counter remedy instead?

Call it a home made remedy. If they ask, say it is a local mineral boiled with whatever they add. You can’t take soil. They do not like muddy shoes, especially if you have been near livestock. You can take most herbs and a lot of spices. You should be fine.

The main thing they don’t want to see is soils, seeds, plants, fruits and meats. Prepared foods are generally fine.

You should also declare it. They may ask and look. But then the worst you are going to face is seizure.

That is a very good question.

For the fact that it has been cooked means that all bugs/pests or even diesese would be out of the 'dirt'. I would say yes but mabye check with a Government authority (like an embassy) before you go.

i dont think you can take that because it would need to be quarantined for a week or so and then you can have it back.
