I checked Microsoft's website, and here's what I was able to find.....

Technically, you must follow this statement, located in section 1.1 of the EULA (End-User Liscense Agreement)

"The Software may not be used by more than one processor at any one time on any single Workstation Computer."

What this means is, you can install it on both your desktop and your laptop,
But
you can only turn on one at a time.

I've actually heard this from friends, but I just checked up on it now. See for yourself......

you are allowed 1 legal install per CD-key.. if you install XP with the same CD-key on another computer, your 'supposed' to not be using the original system.. and with the way the 'windows genuine advantage' system works now, you're likely to end up calling microsoft tech support trying to figure out why one or both of your systems cant do major updates because the WGA says your system isnt a genuine install..

You can only install it on one of the computers. The Windows installer memorizes unique characteristics of the computer, therefore preventing installation on another computer using the same key. You will need to purchase another license key, which is basically the same cost as a new CD.
