A dogs nose will be wet or dry, cool or warm, depending on the air temperature and humidity around them. They do lick their noses a lot, and moist noses can smell better. Try wetting the inside of your nose--you'll notice you can smell better too!

I have heard that is the mucus lining that makes it wet. I have also heard that it gets wet from dog's licking their noses. It is a myth that a wet nose means a healthy dog and a dry nose means a sick dog.
I know this is not a definitive answer to what causes it, but it is no big deal from what I have read, whether the dog's nose is wet or dry.

I have 2 chihuahuas and I have been told that if your dog has a cold and wet nose, it means he is healthy and if his nose is dry and not cool you should keep an eye on him, although some days my dogs noses are dry and then the next day they are wet again. If one of your chis has a dry, warm nose you could probably call your vet and ask if it's anything to worry about. Good Luck

Dogs have thousands of sensors in their nose that help them seperate smells which is why they make such great detector dogs. However, much like your taste buds they are made of a membrane material so they must stay moist. Dogs naturally sweat through their nose to keep these membrane sensors moist and working. Sometimes the nose will become dried out and crack which limits the dogs ability slightly but you can help by applying a small bit of plain, not flavored or medicated, lip balm.
