Please help me. She is lonely and she has no preference. My dad died 2 years ago and she recently lost their German Shepherd, but she says she would like an inside pet, but doesn't care if it is a cat or dog, and is leaving it up to me. I just don't know what to do. Any suggestions???

I definitely suggest an older cat. It can take care of itself but will want lots of love. Shelters often have trouble finding homes for older cats, but they're often the best choice, especially for someone who is older themselves. I definitely think an older male cat, especially, would be wonderful. Make sure he's fixed, and up to date on shots, and you won't have to worry about him for a while. The only thing she'll have to do is keep up with the litter box. Get a self-feeder and a self-water dish and it will be the most low-maintenance, cuddly companion ever.

I am definitely a dog person, but I think a cat would be better for an elderly woman. They won't need to be taken in and out to use the bathroom. They also don't require a whole lot of grooming. If it were my mom, I would get her a cat. Maybe even an adult cat from a shelter. A kitten would be rambunctious, but an adult cat is much calmer.

I would suggest a small dog or cat. Cats I would say are less to maintain and dont require as much attention but then she'd always be cleaning out the litterbox. I think a small dog would be better, a lap dog is best for elderly folks.

The cats are a lot less work. My wife and I have two house cats at the moment and i never thought I would like cats prior to having them. I have owned three dogs in my life - two German Shephards and a Rottie, so thought I would always be a big dog fan - but the cats are cool as well

I think a small dog would be good for her. I had a friend whos grandmother had a big dog, and while she was letting him do "hims business outside" he saw a cat and bolted towards it, and he ended up breaking her leg in two different places. So i wouldnt go with a big dog, but then again, little dogs are active at times! There might be someone you can hire to come to her home and interact with her, wether it be playing board games or going for a short walk, it would give you a break, and give her something to do. I dont know if i helped to much, but hope i did a little, wish you luck!

Please get her a cat. I am an animal lover, and have had cats all my life until very recently when i got a small dog. I absolutely love it but if i had to do it again, i would get a cat rather. Dogs are very demanding (time, energy), they are exactly like kids, you constantly have to play with them. Cats in the other are totally independant, playful when you want to play, quiet when you need some quiet time, you do not need to train them to go potty, and gave you lot of love (just as much as dogs do)...The big PLUS is that cats do not bark! If she want a loving and peaceful friend, get a cat.
Good luck!

I would try a cat because unless it is an old dog, it will tend to be more playful than a cat. He could possibly hurt her if shes elderly so I think that a cat would be a better choice. Not a kitten though, because they are as playful as dogs. If you do decide to get her a dog, get her a small one like a yorkie or a chiuaua.

Definitely a cat. They pretty much take care of themselves. The only upkeep she'd need to do is feed them and change the litter box.

If it's definitely indoor, get it declawed. Some people think that's cruel, but if you wanna play that game, keeping an animal pent up inside a house forever is cruel too. Anyway... getting it declawed is the way to go.

Make sure you get all the necessary shots too, that way she won't have to worry about taking it to the vet.

As a bonus, you should hook her up with a litter box, a few bags of litter, a few bags of food and some toys. You can get flushable clumping litter too. So all she'd have to do is scoop it out and flush it down the toilet.

Well, cats tend to be better inside pets, but they're not usually as loyal, and live longer than dogs, so you might have to take care of where the cat goes after.....
I personally like dogs because they generally love people alot, but you will have to pick the perfect inside dog..... good luck!

The nice thing about cats is that they can go to the bathroom in a box, while a dog makes a mess outside. I would choose a cat because to me that is a much easier cleanup. Cats are also very cuddly, make sure you get a nice one that likes to snuggle. Hope this helps!
