Actually it is the mitre he carries, on it is written in latin, VICARIUS FILII DEI (Vicar of the son of God) If you add it up like this V=5 I=1 C=100 A=0 R=0 I=0U=5 S=0, F=0 I=1L=50 I=1I=1, D=500 E=0 I=1 (these are all roman numerals look em up) It adds up to 666, the number of a man The Pope.

The claim is that one can calculate the number of the beast by adding up the numbers in a name or title that have numerical values in the Roman number system. So Protestants pointed to "Vicarius Filii Dei", Vicar of the Son of God, in Latin, which fits the number.

Of course, any Catholic reading this will ask "Isn't if Vicar of Christ that is the Pope's title?" Yes, but unfortunately for Protestants that title doesn't fit the number. How inconvenient!

Using the same system one can prove that Barney is the antichrist, since "Cute Purple Dinosaur" also fits. And he is a beast, after all.

No.

This claim has been made by some fundamentalist protestant sects who believe that the pope as head of the Roman Catholic Church is the antichrist.

Four definitive sources are sometimes given:
- A protestant woman visiting Rome said she witnessed Pope Gregory XVI wearing a crown with the words on it, in or around 1832;
- Pope Gregory XVI had worn a papal tiara with these words clearly visible on it at a Pontifical High Mass during Easter 1845;
- The 'existence' of a photograph of a papal funeral at the start of the twentieth century (which probably means the funeral of Pope Leo XIII in 1903 but could possibly be Pope Pius X's in 1914) showing the words on a papal tiara.

The tiara (with the words mentioned) is always used to crown popes, but specifically was used in 1939 to crown Eugenio Pacelli as Pope Pius XII.

The claim is demonstrably false.

Whether or not the numerised total of the letters in Vicarius Filii Dei produce the total '666' is irrelevant because no such title actually exists for the papacy or the Holy See.

While the words did feature in the Donation of Constantine (now known to be a forged document) they referred to St. Peter and not subsequent popes.

In 1832, only two tiaras existed; one from the sixteenth century and one, given by Napoleon I to Pope Pius VII in 1804. Neither contain writing.

You can work up some 666 for every dang person you can think of, like add up the letters of their name and add the birthdate, or something.

If you want to be freaked out, read the book called, "From 9-11 to 666" by some guy named Stice. You would be amazed at the similarities between the Muslim view of the "savior" and "Jesus" who will come in the end times (the 12th imam and "Jesus") to turn everyone into Muslims...it sounds exactly like the Revelation, only opposite.

Fools! Anyone who is against Christ is antiChrist. And of all the creatures on this earth, only( man )has the ability or intellegence to be against Christ. The number 666 falls short of 777 which is perfection. And in this age of carnal human life on this earth, we are all imperfect.

Nice try, you papist puppet. Your lame attempt at trying to make Protestants into the enemy is very transparent. Go read the Bible, and pray for some enlightenment. Troll Alert.

The pope will be the false prophet that is for certain. But he will not be the anti christ. The anti christ will be the politcal leader at the time of the end.
