“For truly, I say to you, till heaven and earth pass away, not an iota, not a dot, will pass the law until all is accomplished. Whoever then relaxes one of the least of these commandments and teaches men so, shall be called least in the kingdom of heaven; but he who does them and teaches them shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.” (Matthew 5:18-19 RSV)
"It is easier for Heaven and Earth to pass away than for the smallest part of the letter of the law to become invalid." (Luke 16:17 NAB)
"Do not think that I have come to abolish the law or the prophets. I have come not to abolish but to fulfill. Amen, I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not the smallest part or the smallest part of a letter will pass from the law, until all things have taken place." (Matthew 5:17 NAB)

"All scripture is inspired by God and is useful for teaching, for refutation, for correction, and for training in righteousness..."
"Know this first of all, that there is no prophecy of scripture that is a matter of personal interpretation, for no prophecy ever came through human will; but rather human beings moved by the holy Spirit spoke under the influence of God." (2 Peter 20-21 NAB)

He that curseth father or mother, let him die the death.” (Matthew 15:4-7)
Peter says that all slaves should “be subject to [their] masters with all fear,” to the bad and cruel as well as the “good and gentle.” This is merely an echo of the same slavery commands in the Old Testament. 1 Peter 2:18
Did not Moses give you the law, and yet none of you keepeth the law" (John7:19) and “For the law was given by Moses,..." (John 1:17).

Hello,
It should be read and studied for knowledge and education and see how Christianity evolved but we are supposed to concentrate on the New Testament. That is the "new covenent" we got from God symbolized by the tearing of the sacred veil in the temple when Jesus died on the cross. And by the way, you have just quoted Matthew and Luke - New Testament books.
Christ was annoyed at the religious status quo at the time because they were so obsessed with hundreds of laws and were thus blinded and were ignoring how to live and love one another. Such samples were the woman caught in adultery; curing a person on the sabbath etc. When Pharisees tried tricking him with questions on the law to show him up as a traitor or hypocrite he called them a brood of vipers.
So one has to ask if Christ said what he said about the law and its flaws on a few occasions then you look at the verses above as written then I hate to say it but Christ is contradicting himself.

Jesus did establish a new covenant with us and if you read all of John 5 He often says like "Ye have heard it was said by them of old time...verse 21....then verse 22 , "BUT I say unto you..." and He explains the new covenant. Verse 27, 28 the same, etc. And you're right because He did say in 5:17 not to abolish (or destroy completely) the law or prophets, but fulfilling and explaining it more completely. Can someone help me here: Where does it also say "..the old (ways) have passed away..."? We do not dismiss or ignore the Old Testament. It was as much of my upbringing as the New.

They don't ignore it. But the old laws were changed by Jesus himself. Not all of them, of course, like the 10 Command-ments, but in the Old Testament, for instance, they could not eat "swine." However, in the New Testament, Jesus cleansed all food. Do you know that a Jewish man (in the Old Testament) could divorce his wife simple by turning in a 180 degree circle and saying each time he completed the circle saying "I divorce thee? But Jesus said that was a practice to be discontinued. A man could also marry his sister, cousin, niece, etc. But in the New Testament that was changed also.
So Christians don't forget or ignore the Old Testament. It's simply that the New Testament is the Word of Jesus' himself, and therefore much more relevant to Christians (followers of Christ.)

Gal 3:1You foolish Galatians! Who has bewitched you? Before your very eyes Jesus Christ was clearly portrayed as crucified. 2I would like to learn just one thing from you: Did you receive the Spirit by observing the law, or by believing what you heard? 3Are you so foolish? After beginning with the Spirit, are you now trying to attain your goal by human effort? 4Have you suffered so much for nothing—if it really was for nothing? 5Does God give you his Spirit and work miracles among you because you observe the law, or because you believe what you heard?

Sorry, the OT is 'inspired' by God, the NT instead, is the 'Real' Word of God, 'cause He personally went to us! So, if He went not to abolish but to fulfil, we 'must' know the whole Word, but we have to follow the last one, 'cause It is more valid and new than the old one. Otherwise it was unnecessary coming to us!

The word of God and the law have not passed away.
Jesus did fufill the law by paying the penalty of death for those who accept his atonement. We who have accepted the atonement are by faith changed and are in agreement with God's law not under the law but free to worship in spirit and truth rather than traditions of law.

Because they want to avoid following the laws of God. I think your additions to your question all point out vividly that the New Testament does not overwrite the old, but confirms it.

When Christ died on the cross for us...He fulfilled the law. We are now saved by grace and not by the temporary blood of animals and the letter of the law. Jesus, in His perfectness, allowed for our imperfectness when He shed His blood for us.
