I don't know. I never give wiccans a second thought.

Because they fear the unknown, but all they bother to know is their God, hence fearing and condmning everything else.

You know, and I know, and many other people know that Wiccans are not evil and that we do not believe in the Christian idea of Satan. However, there is the rest of the world that will refuse to believe any differently than the church tells them, and the chruch most commonly tells them that we are terrible people going to hell. Brush it off. They are weak in their faith to not understand that there are many paths to the Divine, and that God is the same, no matter what She is called. No path is any more right than the other, in the long run. What matters is that you are happy walking the path that you choose. People who try to condemn you don't matter.

And, um, "wiccan" is not a belief. A Wiccan is a person who follows Wicca. And it doens't date back to pre-christianity. It is a Neo-Pagan religion BASED ON ancient Pagan ideas, started by Gerald Gardener. (I'd get the facts right before you make a total fool ofyourself, dear)

Blessed Be.

My girl friend is an ex wiccan I know allot about it. Her mother still is. The reason why people believe it is of satan is because they often talk to spirit guides, not all but most. The bible says they are demons that are posing as spirits. Its not that wiccans worship Satan its that they talk to Spirits that are from him. Wiccan might be pre Christian but it is not pre demons or "spirits" nor is it pre Genesis. The God of the bible says we are not to worship the creation but only the creator. anything less than that is not of him so it does not save.

Wiccans are nice people as fare as I know. I know many and they are great people. But wiccan is not of God.

maybe not all christians think wiccans are devil worshipers it is judging on how they dress they dress black and not only how they dress but other things jesus's colour is white right i mean why does black have to be a bad colour we don't know who made all this so peple wonder what does the star represent maybe they can tell people. people don't think christians are devil worshipers because there sign is a cross. almost everyone knows that the cross represents when jesus was killed on it because he died for all of us wiccan, jewish who ever you are beautiful ugly sad happy so just be good i mean even if you don't believe why do you have to do bad things everyone makes mistakes but we can change.

Actually, *cough*, most evidence points to Wicca being no more than about 60 years old. Check out Ronald Hutton's "The Triumph of the Moon" for non-Wiccan scholar's perspective on the history of modern Pagan witchcraft.

As to your actual question, many Christians assume that ANY religion that is not their own is Satan worship, no matter what we tell them. (The common comeback is that we just don't KNOW that we're worshipping Satan.) If you live in an area of the world that has a lot of fundamentalist Christians in it, you're likely to run into the attitude a lot. The best advice I can give you is: let it slide off your back, and don't let the turkeys get you down.

Most people think (correctly) that most Wiccans are harmless New Age-esque types, not devil worshippers.

Oh, and for a Wiccan, you're shockingly lacking in knowledge about our history.

I am an open minded christian, and I disagree with this statement. It's not that we think your religion is one of Devil Worship, it's because when you worship, you dont worship the Lord God. Our theology states that any religion that doesnt glorify the Lord God is a false reliogion, guided by a false prophet. And in our theology, if you're not with us (on jesus's side) you're against us. And who is against Jesus? Satan. It's not the theology that sets us apart, it's the side of the fence. Not saying you're going to hell or anything, that i dont know. But I have research wiccan theology, and it doesnt seem to be harmful in anyway, its simply the not with us against us fact that turns most people to think that you worship satan. Obviously you dont. Peace to you and all that is.

That type of thinking usually goes along with immaturity or insecurity about one's own faith. There is input from Hollywood, which likes to link nonChristianity with evil (the Dragnet movie with People Against Goodness and Normalcy comes readily to mind, as does an Indiana Jones movie portraying the cult of Kali).
Generally, though, anyone treating others in the way that you describe is not a Christian...he or she is a poser who wants to get respect from others that he or she does not have for herself; they want to prove the correctness of their religion by tearing down other people's beliefs. Its Junior High Mentality at its worst.

Because people are misinformed and they go by what other people say instead of doing the research themselves.

Some people argue that God's book does not agree with Wicca. (Then again - wasn't His book written by humans?)

All religions have some kind of stereotype. Wiccans are seen as evil, Christians are seen as very spiritual and pushy, Buddhists are seen as calm and peaceful.

The media has not helped either. Movies and books degrade Wicca. Also, you never hear about people in movies with other religions unless they are centered around that religoin. Haven't you noticed that in books and movies they always show people praying together, saying quotes from the Bible, and stuff like that?

It is a universal problem to not accept people of different religions. Some Christians in China might find it awkward when everyone else seems to be praying to Buddha and celebrating Chinese New Year. Just like Buddhism in China, Christianity has become part of American culture.

America, however, seems to have a harder time accepting people for who they are than any other country. It is probably because it has the hugest range of people, but everyone is trying to narrow that range down to a single stereotype.

There are churches, crosses and Bibles everywhere. If Wicca books, incence, and stuff like that showed up in regular stores like Christian objects do people wouldn't think twice about it.

Wicca is a very different belief system based on a different way of thinking. It is about the inner you and the universe outside of you. Christianity is about living life as best as you can in honor of Jesus for giving up his life, living up to God's standards and making it to Heaven. I am in no way trying to be sarcastic here but I do not have enough time to try to sum up a one thousand page book and two thousand year old religion right now.

Sadly to say Christians believe their religion based on what they read in the Bible, but few of them have read other religious books than the Bible.

Conformity. It is what everyone else is doing. A lot of my friends at school are not really Christian because they do not agree with the religion but they are too scared or uncertain to change to something they like better. Either due to the pressure of their parents or their friends.

In my opinion..Christians or others feel it goes against the teachings of the Holy Bible so it's not a belief that they would accept....there are verses in the bible that instruct to stay away from certain practices or people. That certain rituals and behavior is dealing with the dark spirits of the universe...which means you are going away from God not towards him.

You're right, it does date back to pre-Christianity. Could you see a reason why people trying to convert an entire empire to Christianity would want to demonize alternate belief systems?

It was easy to play off of people's paranoia, gullibility and simple ignorance back then. People's educations depended much more heavily on what they were told than what research they could do independently. Therefore, the construction of stigmas and prejudices was like clockwork, and their residual effects are what you're seeing today, many centuries later.
