Do dogs understand what it means when you kiss them? I've been told that they don't, and one of the main reasons kids are bitten by dogs is because they kiss them. But I've also been told that dogs can sense the affection in a kiss.

My dog loves kisses. I always give her lots and kisses, and she always returns it by giving me tons of kisses. There could really be a debate about it because it's hard to know if they understand the affection behind it. Dogs love the salt on peoples skin so some say that's why they kiss. But my dog, I can go up to her and say "Can mommy have a kiss" and she run right over to me and cover me in kisses, So in my opinion dogs totally understand the affection of a kiss. I mean even when I'm upset she'll sit there and kiss me and comfort me. So yes, I think dogs know the affection behind a kiss.

If the dog trusts you, you can certainly kiss him, but it is just plain stupid to kiss a dog you don't know well, the dog may well construe it as an attack if you come at his face suddenly.

Another reason kids get bitten is that they grab the dog and hug him - that can scare a dog, it is very threatening to be held against your will.

Use common sense and teach kids not to go near dogs they do not know well. Always monitor children when they are with dogs, don't leave little kids alone with any dog. Kids are very jumpy and unpredictable, that scares a lot of dogs and they react by biting.

It's the parents obligation to teach kids good manners, with dogs and with others in general, not to blame it on the dog after the kids gets bitten for being impulsive and scaring a dog.

My Boxer loves kisses from me and my family. She is extremely socialized, as she goes to work with me every day. She was kicked by a horse at 6 months, but wasn't badly injured. She has had a respect for horses ever since. I call it the kick that saved her life. I don't know about all Boxers as a breed, but mine craves affection from humans, and has a respect for horses. I might add that I work at a horse stable.

Dogs understand what kisses are, because your body starts to make a different scent on how you are feeling. So when you kiss he can smell the scent. Usually it is the scent that means love.

Dogs don't care what you do if you seem to be loving them, they'll accept it as affection.

You're all right, because dogs don't learn it from puppyhood, but they know we're different.
