People who cut are not necessarily suicidal. Some people do it to attract attention, some do it to get a "buzz" from the brain's natural painkillers (endorphins).
I strongly doubt that anyone who cuts is living a "happy life." That is, unless they cut for cultural reasons or to fit into some kind of social group.
Some people commit suicide because
1. They are already dying of a terminal disease
2. Someone is going to kill them by murder or execution and they want to "cheat the hangman"
3. They are staging suicide to attract attention or to fake insanity, and they accidentally succeed.
4. They are very psychotic or disoriented, but not particularly depressed, and put themselves in danger (stand in front of a car, etc.)
5. Some cultures expect a person to commit suicide in certain situations of "dishonor."
6. The person believes he is headed to a reward in an afterlife, or that he is dying for a cause or for his country (suicide bombers).

Depression plays a part in almost all people who are suicidal. Sometime I believe someone can have a total break with reality and kill him or herself with a prior history of depression, but this would be very rare.
Cutting is a different type of problem than depression. Cutters may be depressed but usually have a traumatic event that triggered this.

No one who cuts themselves is living a happy life. I know from personal experience because I went through this with my daughter. She ultimately ended up having to have psychiatric treatment, taking medication, and getting counseling. Now she's about ready to enter her third year of college, but it took a lot of work to get where she is. If you know someone who is cutting themselves, they need to seek help immediately, as they most certainly are depressed! Cutting is a way of releasing inner pain, and this person needs to work through whatever is bothering them. Hope this helps. Take care!

I suppose you could be mentally disturbed and suicidal, but not depressed. I can't speak for people who cut themselves. I don't know how they are feeling. I can't imagine someone who cuts themselves is truly happy.

People can be suicidal and not necesarily depressed. A good example of this is someone who commits a heinous crime or a crime of a sexual nature and is caught. Sometimes these people opt for suicide rather than prosecution and embarassment.

It's unrelated. People who cut themselves are merely attention seeking teenage brats whereas depression is a form of mental illness which must be treated with prescriptive medicine.

Yes....the example I think of is somebody on drugs. Also, it can be part of a personality disorder rather then depression.
