I think they are using a tool to take a spiritual journey. What I also think is that the tool is unnecessary, and that spiritual journeys are better off taken with clarity.
Learned that one the hard way . . .

psychoactive substances have been used as religious sacraments going back much much further than written history. Along with chanting and dancing drugs are used to reach trance states. even modern religions have watered down sacraments like wine, tea and coffee.

I never do any drugs because then I couldn't tell what was drug and what was Goddess. So I couldn't understand any religion that uses drugs.

I've known people that used other mind altering substances in ritual. I don't. Personal choice. To each their own, but I would hope its not habitual use!
