Sound just means "thorough" in this case, I believe.
Thoroughly asleep or thoroughly spanked.
Actually, I approve of both.

check the etymology of the word "sound"; probably it has several meanings -- as do many English words. Sometimes an English word might even have two different origins. Check it out in a large d-i-c-t-i-o-n-a-r-y ... such as the Oxford unabridged.
As for a "sound spanking" ... not the dictionary definition, just mine: a parent provides the "spanks", the kid provides the "sound" -- "yeouch!!!"

Phrases starting with the word Sound generaly are refering to a certain for absolute concept. The wod is from seamen who would guess at the depth of the water most of the time but when they needed to know for sure they sounded for the depth. The guess would be 8 to 12 feet the depth is a sound 9 feet. The defferance would be saying go beat on him a while or give him a sound (exactly) 20 lashs.
It is more british than american but seamen were everyware.
I am going to go get a sound 20 winks.

It means strong.Sound sleep means a good deep sleep, a sound spanking means it did what it was meant to do,make them smart enough to think twice next time before committing the crime.

Sound in this meaning means not rotten. As in the board was sound. No holes. Sound asleep means the sleep was complete. A sound spanking wasn't going to be a light one.

Not so opposite.
Sound is being used to mean completely, or totally, or thoroughly.
A thorough spanking (no shortcuts), the baby is thoroughly asleep (not just dozing a little.)
Likewise, there can be a "sound idea"

In both cases, "sound" is used in the sense of 'solid' or 'definite.' As opposed to 'slight spanking' or 'slightly asleep,' I suppose.

The word sound in that context means a good quality thing... so the spanking was of a high caliber and so was the sleep...

never heard of sound spanking maybe because I do not believe in spanking my kids. Sound asleep= to sleep without sound no sound getting through, dead to the world.
Sleeping that sound is a gift and a curse all in one.
God Bless

"when somebody is gonna get a spanking they usually say something along the lines of a "sound spanking""
I've NEVER heard that before.
Either way .... Its the American language .... confusing, contradicting, etc ...

Sound in both cases means "thorough".
A thorough spanking - sort of a complete spanking.
A thorough sleep - a deep sleep.
