Does anyone believe that they need to obey every law in affect? Since so many believe that we are born into sin does this negate our need to try to be Moral.
This question may seem to be across the board but it would appear that every time a Moral question arrises then we feel the need to impliment a new Law. [Abortion for instance] or drug use etc. etc. but does anyone realize that with each new law we loose that much more freedom that we will never get back. There are so many in fact that I don't believe that anyone even tries to obey them all, just the ones that pertain or that we truly fear the consequences of. So is the general census that a Law is a deterant? If that were the case then what happened with prohibition and why is there still so much drug use?
Comments please and Thanks in advance.

I am by no means suggesting that there should be no Law, but have we created our own prison by our lack of responcibility, and accountability

It's rigid codes of thinking - like LAWS and RELIGIONS - that cause most of the problems in our society!

If everybody lived a good moral life (or believed in the concept of Karma - or "what goes around, comes around") - then there would be no need for laws and rules. But since our society is so morally corrupt - we have no choice but to enforce the very laws that are holding us back...

In other words - we have become prisoners in our own homes! And WE are the ones holding the keys!

The fundamental IDEAS being taught by the Bible are sound - but it is the forced doctrine of these simple concepts that makes so many turn their backs to the Church...

Laws are only needed when morals fail. If no one ever stoled, there would be no need for "Thou shall not steal". But since people do, we have laws to define what is and is not proper behavior.

If a person is unable to control their actions by their morals, then it falls to society or the government to enforce "morality".

As long as people want to commit an immoral act, no law will stop them. But it will give others a legal way to try to prevent them from doing it. And, yes, it does deter many people.

Are there too many laws? I believe it was Oliver Wendall Holmes who said the American government has had to enact 500 thousands laws to try and enforce 10 Commandments.

As you can see from the responses of all, each has their own set of rules that they feel should be followed. And I in a way agree. However, we all live by our own set of laws, and those set may not especially be in accord with my neighbor. Therefore it is necessary for any society, culture, tribe or civilization to implement some code of conduct, laws, or guide lines that all will be held accountable too, for the good of all.

I agree that it seems that every time we turn around there is a new law for this and that but this in itself does not make laws bad. I would say that we need to look at those that are putting forth the laws and what for. But...it is easy to pass a law, for votes, for entitlements, and for power of those we even elect. Then isn't it our fault that we have allowed ourselves to be enslaved by those we so entrusted to do our bidding for us, instead of taking care of things ourselves.

Those who write the laws know how to move as masses, and we do not as individuals stand up for law and order or demand change when needed. (We can talk about how the masses gratefully follow their leaders into hell, but that another matter).

Since the family and society determine what is or isn't moral, we must live by those standards. Sometimes when certain conduct becomes offensive and against the established moral principles, laws must be established. Needless to say, not all societies have the same moral standards.

Laws are our quick response to what we think of being moral or ethical. Well thought out laws reinforce morals and ethical actions. But never a good substitute.

Good morals are independent of political and religious laws. In fact, it is often necessary to break political and religious in order to maintain good morals.
