I have tried to reason with a coworker through a mediator. She has told lies about me and tried to get me fired by saying I'm stalking her and keeping her from doing her job. I have absolutely no contact with her so I don't know how this could be. I have went to her boss to ask him to speak to her about the issues. All he says is that she is not doing it and if I let things be it will go away. Well, it hasn't. She is still telling lies to coworkers about me. I then went to Human Resources to file a claim about her behavior. Again I was told to let it go because filing a claim would only make things worse. She has made my job unbearable because of the constant interrogations when she claims I have done something to her. I don't even work in the same dept. as she does. Leaving my job isn't really an option. I am at my wits end with all this. Any suggestions?

Sounds like a very unpleasant experience for you but you do have a number of options available:

1) Have a frank discussion with the coworker if you haven't already and try to get to the bottom of her motives for doing what she's doing without getting annoyed or aggressive. This may be harder than it sounds and it may be futile if she is being irrational.

2) Raise a grievance with your employer. No matter what they have told you in the past, every employee has the right to raise a grievance and invoke the statutory grievance procedure as set out in Schedule 1 of the Employment Act 2002. Your employer should investigate the substance of your complaint and then arrange a meeting where you discuss what they have found and what they propose to do. You should also be given a right to appeal any decision if it is unsatisfactory.

Before going ahead with step 2, I would recommend that you try to obatian some 'concrete' evidence of your allegation such as a witness to her behaviour or a recipient of the statement that you say is untrue. That way you have somethjing tangible to put forward in evidence of your allegation.

Hey Carrie,
What you're describing is a type of harrassment. Your employer is legally required to investigate her behavior. If they don't, then call the police. Simple as that. I would go to the police department in person, file a claim with them. After that, go to the BBB (Better business bureau) and file a claim with them. If they can't do anything, then get them to tell you who can. You shouldn't have to suffer through all that and you would have a really good case should you wish to take legal action. Trust me, the lawyers will jump at you begging to let them take your case. Just start up a record of every time she confronts you and make sure someone is with you as a witness. Try to write down what she says each time, even if it's in general. Good luck to you!

Concentrate on doing your Job and in the meantime try to learn new skills computer training or whatever to make a good impression on your employers.
