In a nutshell, my Dad is a World of Warcraft (a well-known MMORPG, for those of you who don't) addict, and he can't stop.
I haven't confronted him on the matter, but my mom has, and she gets really upset a lot of times. He plays almost 5 hours some days, and seems depressed any time that he can't/isn't playing.

We're staying away from the house, and since he hasn't been playing, he seems very down. He tried to download it on my laptop, and when it didn't work, to cover it up so I wouldn't see it. Since I played World of Warcraft to these extreme extents a long time ago, I recognize that he misses the game, but I want to show him he needs to stop, so he doesn't get completely consumed by it. It was okay when I did, I didn't have anyone relying on me, and I've recovered since (though I'm not saying what I did was okay). Since he's my dad, I worry about my mom and two younger brothers, that, along with me, rely on him to be there for us, and I want to know how I can help him stop.

From everything I've heard including personal stories from friends, he's not alone. And this is a very serious problem. I know people who have given up their jobs, families and lives for this role playing game. Its incredibly addictive, and I think you are right on target with his symptoms.

I would keep track of how much he plays (do you know where else he is playing, five hours doesn't seem like alot for that kind of depression), and I would do an intervention. I think each family member should tell him how his game playing is effecting them personally. You will need your mothers help with this, she's going to have to play hard ball with him. She needs to insist that he see a counselor that specializes in addictions, this isn't any different than booze, drugs or gambling. I'm afraid the computer has to go, its the only way to control it at home. You all might want to seek support at Alanon.

Some dad's golf everyday, go to the gym, work on their cars or in their workshop, your dad loves his game! He's not trolling the bars trolling for hoochies! Alot of guys (and girls) watch way over 5 hours of t.v. a day. So, what's the problem? Does it interfere with his employment or do you just miss him? Get off his back and stop making him feel like a loser, ok? He's obviously not. Maybe suggest a family day, just once a week. Bring a laptop into the room you guys hang out in. PUt him in a corner where you can wave at him periodically!!!!!!!!
