some wisearse (usually a cop) always pipes up and tells me that I'd want their help if I was in trouble. I wouldn't! Why would I want to wait half an hour fot them to show up instead of taking care of the situation myself? If police want to put a stop to vigilante justice, why don't they start doing a better job themselves? I'm not saying that cops should be eliminated (per se); I'm, just saying that if an armed citizen is close enough to aid in a situation where someone's life is in danger and they would be dead by the time the police got there, I would be much more comfortable if citizens were given training so that they could handle such situations because, as far as I can tell, criminals outnumber police just about everywhere in this country (if not in the whole world).

I agree with your theory on citizens receiving proper training. In fact there is such a place, and many have taken the course already. Of course, not all will qualify. It's called the Police Academy.

Allowing everyone to carry a gun, training or not, would be asking for other unforeseen troubles and it's a scary thought.People are way too stressed in this day and age for the government or other official to be handing any Tom,Dick,or Harry on the street a gun and training would mean nothing if some crazy person got passed it,and it only takes one crazy nut to destroy a whole school.I mean you can't trust your preachers and others that are here to help and yes, even some cops.So I would say if you want to be a good citizen, when you see someone in distress try being there when the cop do shows up with all the information they need and possible go to court and speak up when you see things that aren't right,"legally",and or, if you what to carry a gun and look for criminals then go be a cop, they do offer training. Again this is just my option,so don't take it personally.

First of all, if you don't like it, stop posting and quitcherbitchin.

Secondly, in my state the average citizen CAN carry a weapon legally once a carry permit is obtained. I also, according to the TBI officer who conducted the class, can shoot if I am in IMMINENT DANGER OF SERIOUS BODILY INJURY OR DEATH, OR if someone else is in imminent danger of the same, such as an armed robbery. You obviously can't stroll up to someone who's arguing and blow them away. And you'd sure better be able to prove why it was done. The law is VERY specific, and for good reason.

Why don't you get a job with the police department. They are terribly understaffed as a general rule, they don't get paid nearly enough to put their lives on the line, and budgets especially in small towns just don't allow the hiring of new officers. One town not far from me actually CLOSED DOWN the sheriff's department for several weeks several years ago b/c the money had run out.

i don't know why u have such a problem with the police but they are a nescassary part of our society. some people can't protect themselves and thats why we have them. but ur right more people do need to learn how to protect themselves. there is a town in nebraska where the sherrifs department along with city counsel members made it illegal to go outside WITHOUT a gun. since then the crime rate went from about 45% to an astonishing 0! i'm not saying this would work everywhere but it seems to have done the trick in thier town. and the reason u get a lot of negative comments is because they are going out there and putting thier lives on the line for very little pay everyday and your making fun of them for it. yes there are a lot of crooked cops in the world but there are just as many who are trying to do away with the corruption. most just want to help people and go home at the end of the day without any bloodshed ESPECIALLY caused by themselves. speaking as a former marine its NOT that easy to take someones life. believe me i know from experience. it will haunt u for the rest of your life. you won't be able to close your eyes at night without seeing that persons face. thier job is a lot harder than most people realize and they should be respected for it not hated for it.

Oh gosh I know, lol, on this animal site if I even mentioned that a diet wasn't the best or made someone sick or whatever, they'd get all weird. And yes they take too long sometimes, and one time I called 911, someone wasn't breathing, they took it as if I was joking. They were like, are you sure? I think you should wait to find out blahblah, I mean cops are great ,but their arent nearly enough to equal criminals, and yes training would be great, I'd feel much better if I knew half the stuff my mom did about kicking criminal butt.

While your idea looks good on paper, it would never work because of the corruption in this world. Imagine the Rodney King thing times ten thousand. People are not innately good, and so if they were trained to kill like the Police are, it would be chaos.

What you're describing is anarchy. People could just go around killing each other and getting away with it by saying, "Oh, that person was committing a crime."

The only problem I see is that you use this forum as a soapbox on your beleifs rather than ask questions about Law Enforcement.

We serve a purpose in Society. While not perfect, it is far better than the Vigilante impulses you seem to have. Defending yourself against a criminal is one thing. Assisting Police as a witness is another. Injuring or taking a human life over property(which you seem to be OK with) is way over the line.

Who likes negative comments anyway? Just say and do what you think is appropriate to the situation without mentioning the police. Trying to make yourself hero by good deed while degrading others is offending. And if someone like to go into a scene that probably will put him in court explaining why he did that, don't reason out or more so blame it to the police.

Because the cop is right. You will want and need their help eventually, and maybe you should stop taking such a confrontational attitude about police, because it pisses a lot of people off, because your ideas are flawed and unintellectual..

I'm not a cop, and even I think you're an idiot. Explain that.

You're asking questions under "Law Enforcement and Police." There are probably a lot of police officers responding to your questions.
You obviously have not been in a serious emergency situation before. You would want to have the police available, even if you chose not to call them.
