My 2 year old daughter has been vomiting for a week now. She has been to the doctors once and in the ER twice. Once she was dehydrated and the second time i thought she was bc she didn't pee for 24 hours however she wasn't. They checked her blood and urine and came to the conclusion that she has a virus and there is nothing further they can do. She vomits everytime she eats anything (which is hardly ever) or drinks in bulk (more then an ounce an hour). I was wondering if this is normal or should I take her back to the ER... basically is it normal for a virus to take this long!??!?!?!?

Any answers would be appreciated... thanks!

I should add that during the afternoon she actually gets up and plays and trys to eat something. She has been peeing good today and her last visit to the er was yesterday (bc i thought she was dehydrated) they hydrated her even though her level of hydration was that of an adults which im not sure how that happend bc to me she doesnt seem to be drinking enough. I would say she vomits about 3 times a day mostly when she eats something. She has a fever that does respond to medicine. MOST of the day she is sleeping except those few hours i catch her walking and playing... does it still sound serious like its not a virus or is it ok to wait it out?!?

That's a long time to be sick. And, yes, it happens.Poor little girl. :-(
You need to look at a couple of things: how many times a day is she vomiting, how much time in between the time she vomits and when she's given more fluids, is she peeing x1 at least every 8 hr, is she producing saliva, and does she cry tears. The last 3 items will help you determine if she's dehydrated. After she vomits give her stomach at least an hour before you give her anything to drink. When you re-introduce fluids give her 1 tablespoon of Gatorade (not the red) or pedialyte. then wait 15 minutes. If she keeps it down, give her another tablespoon and so on. Should she vomit, you need to start the hour over.
Also, how is she behaving? Is she playful and active, alert and responsive or is she like a limp noodle, just laying around all day. If she's not improving, take her back to her PCP.

OMG! I would definately take her back to the ER (or at least call your peditrician). It is not normal for a virus to last this long (especially in someone her age). Vomiting for that long is hard on anyone, especially a little tummy like that! Poor little thing:( Don't take "it is only a virus" from the ER Docs either...push until you get an answer! Ask for a specialist to come see her while you are there! Good luck!

Is there a 'Children's Hospital' anywhere near where you live? Your daughter needs to be hospitalized, and get 'proper treatment' ... she should be put NPO and on intravenous fluids until this 'virus' runs it's course and she can 'eat' without vomiting. If her doctor and your hospital won't do this, then take her to a hospital that WILL. Yes, a virus can last longer than three days ... they can last up to a month or more ... and your daughter could 'dehydrate' (if she isn't already) and die, because these doctors sent her home.

this is very concerning. a week is way too long for a two year old even if it is a virus. she can't drink enough to keep herself hydrated. i'd go back to the doc or er and demand they help her. a virus can sometimes take a while but, she isn't drinking. that should be a concern for the docs.

No. i don't believe it's normal to vomit every day for almost a week.
Make an emergency appointment at your regular doctor, then ask for a referral to whatever specialist he/she thinks could help.
Or, go back to ER and be the squeaky wheel..make some noise. Be persistent. Ask for answers. I know it's easy to feel like they MUST know what they are doing, but you hear too many stories.....God Bless

A week is a really long time to be vomiting. More so for a two-year old.

She needs to be getting TREATED now. Meanwhile, get some acidophilus in her.

Good luck and be well.
