I have a two year old tabby cat. He is a sweet heart. Very healthy, and wide open all the time. He is a mischief maker, and always doing something. In last couple of days, he has developed this cough, or sneeze or something. He will just stop whatever he's doing and cough real hard two or three times. He is still eating good, and sleeping good, and playing. I have a vet appointment in the morning, but does anyone have any idea what I may be looking at? Needless to say, he's our baby!

Sounds like a respiratory infection. If so your vet will most likely prescribe an antibiotic like Clavamox which will clear it up pretty quickly.

Good for you for taking kitty to the vet rather than just watching him suffer like so many bad owners on this site - you're definitely proving he's your baby as you're treating like family - as you should! :)

Yes and no. I'll look it up. "For sneezing bouts that often plague young cats for weeks, and where the animals aren't spiking a fever and are just slightly off their food, I will use a combination of the homeopathic remedy Aconitum along with the herb pleurisy root. The two should bring improvement within 2 weeks. Both medicines, give: 3 drops once or twice a day." Else, Arsenicum album, give:2 pellets of 6C potency, 6-7 times for 2-3 days. If no changes occur, use a 30C potency 3 times daily for 3 days.

Cats do get colds, and it's very possible that is his ailment. However, the vet appointment is definitely a good thing to have. While colds are fairly common, upper respiratory diseases (such as cat flu) can be VERY serious. Explain the problem to your vet and he should be able check up on it. More often than not it's just a cold, but those times where it's an infection, it's important you catch it before it becomes too serious.

Could be as simple as a hairball-they always sound like they are trying to cough up a lung!
I's keep the vet appointment to be sure it isn't something more serious, but I wouldn't worry unless the vet gives bad news.

Does he have a siamese or oriental background? Siamese & Orientals are prone to getting asthma and the cough you are descibing sounds remarkably like what my asthmatic siamese used to do.

My vet has told me that in the 30+ years he has been a cat specialist he has only EVER seen asthma in siamese, orientals and cats that once you trace their history you find a siamese or oriental in there somewhere.

If it is asthma, it's really simple to live with, but you will need to do things like change to a cat litter that is NOT clay based as clay based litters will kick dust up in his face & make his asthma worse

You can tell he's your baby, you've got the appointment all lined up and you're ready to go! :) Good for you!
Hopefully you'll get it all sorted out and he'll be back to himself in no time. Best of luck!

This time of the year he could have what's called cheat grass or foxtail caught in his throat. It is very common in most parts of the country. Glad you're taking him in. That is the best solution. Good luck!

One of my cats cough but it usually a hairball that causes it. I would still take him to the vet to be safe.
