I live with my Grandfather who is 81 years old. He has always been the smartest person that I have ever known (valedictorian in high school & Vice President of a bank for 40 years), but in the past year his short term memory is going. I just watched a great movie with him and at the end he tells me that he didn't understand a thing about it and when I asked what he didn't understand, it was clear to me that he forgot the whole first part of the movie... He has been taking a prescription drug the past 6 months but it only seems to make him tired and doesnt seem to help. I am more worried than ever & am desperately looking for help with this before it gets really bad, any answers will be appreciated.

I was helping my 84 yr old neighbor who has advanced Alzheimers. She would forget her meds, drop them, mess up her checking account and on and on. She was on namenda but once it gets to a certain stage, it really doesn't help much.

I had to quit helping her sadly for the liability level got too high for she was accusing me of all sorts of things. I went in one morning and she was still in the same clothes as the day before. I told her she needs to change her clothes and she said "No I will not...you can't make me and I refuse!" I walked out of the house with her meds and went right for her daugher's house. She is living alone so thank God he has you but you need to get into forums of Alzheimers or go to support groups. It is a very difficult process to go through. Her own daughter can't handle it.

Good Luck to you. If you get your grandfather to a doctor soon enough, Namenda and some other drugs can slow down the progression.

They have found no help for this disease and its just slowly going to take him away from you. they will forget and slowly it will get worse then they will not speak and stare and then sometimes they rock back and forth then they get to poing where they are abig violent. its horrible but it takes their brain functions away. it will slwoly get worse till they finally just die. i know its hard but remember this person you know was goine alot time ago. hes not in a good place when he finally rests and he did love you reemmber the good times and this will be best there maybe sometimes things to alevate pain but you can ask the parents to help you get through this and it will help get on line and learn about ths disease it will tellyou alot of things and symptoms this was coming on for very long time before it hit. sorry
