Yes the transmissions are junk in these. But you can take a few steps to help yours last longer. First invest in a external tranny cooler, they are about $45 on summitracing.com for a B&M supercooler which is the best. You can install a tranny cooler yourself in about 1hour with a few basic tools. Also service your tranny regularly and consider using synthetic ATF in it which takes longer to break down. Also when you fill it make sure the fluid level is 1/4 to 3/8 of an inch over the full mark with the engine idling in park or neutral and the motor warm. The reason for this is because on the Taurus when you take a quick corner all the fluid runs to one side of the pan and the filter is above the fluid for a few seconds causing the tranny to slip ( you may have notice it jerk coming out of corner) Good luck!

Good report in general. Ford's always watching to upgrade the carriage, the weight balance, also the materials. I would get in general the overall directive is not independent as one would think, TAURUS has not had enough investors and independent design in the average factory mass produced model. The potential of a design as it sits in this model has gone downhill. The highlight of the earlier heavyweighted set of success was due to preferential release date, and safety investor. Now they reside in the middle of the large model history and have not got a large model, very few have, and this area getting very old is that handling is tedious, and outright over momentous. The shape is not fuel effiecient.

The Taurus is notorious for blowing transmissions. Expect to get 70,000-80,000 out of one provided you check it to make sure it is not leaking plus you clean the transmission cooler (near the radiator) on a regular basis.

transmissions are mostly problem free...some idiots think there car is a nascar stock car and ruin a perfectly good trans by beating it to death...i have had 13 taurus/sable auto's that were problem free...is that a fluke? i think not...i service when required...i drive hard but do not abuse car...only problem i am aware of is duratech 3.0 (overhead cam motor)has a headgasket problem...not sure if it is neglect or some other problem...but they do fail in some vehicles...
