It's very possible with the right tools and know-how. When I was looking to do something similar a while back, I found a great article series on TechLore.com that tells you everything you need to know. There's nothing I could say here that would compare.

They used to sell a device (and they probably still do, but I wouldn't know where to find one) that allowed you to project your 8mm movies onto a small screen and focus your video camera on the screen. The point of this was to transfer 8mm to tape. However, you could use the same system if you then added a video capture board and software to your PC.

Based on what you've said, you'll need to buy
1. a DVD burner
2. a video camera
3. a PC-TV card
4. the 8mm-video transfer device.

You're looking at an investment of about $750 - $1000.

OR, you can look for a company that will provide this service for you. Try the yellow pages. It's a pretty common offering. Of course, if the home movies are of a private nature, you might want to avoid this route.

Yea, I do this all the time at work. Basically your computer needs a video capture card that will allow you to connect your 8mm video recorder to it...then you play the video back and digitize the video onto the computer. Then you can burn the file onto a DVD or whatever. The software is all free, but the video capture card might cost you aroudn $100

it somewhat is not precisely a sparkling camcorder, it somewhat is long discontinued with the aid of Sony. you have somewhat picked a Rube Goldberg technique of having VHS digitized and on your laptop! The spec sheet says it has the two AV enter and AV output on the mini-plug. If this works like my Sony watchman, an identical connections are used bi-directional. yet your VCR connections are actually not bi-directional, so which you will possibly desire to manually substitute the plug connections on the VCR between checklist and playback sessions. i think of this may well be your subject. additionally bear in mind that Digital8 information in undemanding terms a million hour making use of a 2 hour Hi8 tape. so which you will might desire to alter tapes for each hour of flow.
