I've been tortured for years with all those dumb ads about "The goodness of whole grain" what exactly is so good about it?

Whole grain has all the nutrients that are naturally in the grain. When it is processed, the nutrients are removed, thus you get white bread. Some wheat breads are "enriched", where they supposedly put some of the nutrients back.

But once the nutrients are removed, their biochemical structure is destroyed and it's never as potent.

Whole grains are more healthy for your body and provide many needed nutrients.

Whole grains are supposed to have more fiber. More fiber helps with cholesterol control, since fiber can actually remove cholesterol from the bloodstream. Soluble fiber can be found in most "whole grain" products, whether they be wheat, oats or barley, etc. The more elusive insoluble fiber can also be found with whole grains, which will never be found with more processed grains. Insoluble fiber is supposed to have even more cholesterol and cancer-fighting qualities, since even more cholesterol will "stick" to the fiber in the bloodstream and get eliminated.

It has fibre which is good for your digestive system and contains more of what our bodies really need, it's as simple as that. Whole gains are nearer to a natural diet which is what we are designed for biologicaly. The further we get from this, the less healthy it is. But a bit of both is fine - don't worry too much or you will go crazy and stop enjoying food.

∙ more fiber than in equivalent flour-based products
∙ retains vitamins and minerals stripped away in the refining process
∙ tastes better (your mileage may vary)
