so we found this dog, we thought she was a stray bcause she was so skinny and her nails are like an inch long. So we decided to keep her. She looked like she was unowned for the longest time. We named her drop dead fred, aka fred or fredrica. So 2 days later, i was walking her and a girl came up to me and said "thats my dog!" she said she lost it 2 days befor, and thats when we saw her. So she took her home. she said if anything comes up and they can't keep her they'd give the dog to us and we agreed. But fred, or meena, eats really well. So they must not feed her much. i mean u can c her back bone!!!!!! And her nails are soo long!! so she clearly wasn't taken to the vet. She's not taken care of and she's only a baby. (she's a chihuahua) If they can't take care of it, they shouldn't have it. What shouldi do???? PLEASE HELP!!! i love animals and i'll do everything i can to help them!!! so please help us!!

It was good of you to think of this dog! You are right, these are red flags that the dog is not being well taken care of. You should ask the woman why she was not cutting the dogs nails and why she was so skinny. You are right. If they can't take care of it, they should not have it! You should contact a humane society and ask if they could go and check out the place where this pup is living.

Call the woman and tell her that you are concerned about the dogs health and that they should take her to the vet to get her checked out. If she says no, then contact animal control or call a vet. Good luck and you did the right thing! I hope that the puppy is alright. You are a very good person! Keep on top of this and let us know what happened. -Audrina

I don't know. There are several options. You could offer to buy the dog for a nominal amount,( go to their house with some treats for the dog,and explain how you became attached to her in such a short time;they may just give her to you) but then they would probably just get another one and treat it badly as well.Or,you could call the local Animal Welfare Agency ( ASPCA;Humane Society) and explain the situation.Or,you could come right out and confront the owners, but I find that they do not like that!Or,you could explain nicely to them that their dog is a little thin and needs some vet care, and maybe you could help? Some people are just ignorant, and don't know that they are mistreating or neglecting an animal until someone tells them. Maybe that's the case here.Oh,and I have had two Chihuahuas, and I know people with Chihuahuas, and none of them were so thin that you could see their backbones, and one inch nails are way too long!

You need to report this. And you have plenty of love to give and are able to care for it so should be able to adopt Meena/Fred/Fredrica. Because the poor baby needs your help and love. Obviously the girl don't know how to care for the dog and parents don't care!

Reporting Cruelty
A person reporting animal cruelty should ask for the name of the animal control officer and ask what action is planned. Follow up, and report any change observed in the animal's condition and situation. A person reporting animal cruelty need not be concerned with confidentiality. An investigating officer is not likely to identify the source of the complaint. Should the keeper of the animal be prosecuted, witnesses may be called to testify, but the immediate condition of the animal should outweigh concerns about having to testify months from now.

Documentation
Documenting the incident with photographs and videotape can be very helpful in prosecution. If such cruelty is not witnessed directly but is suspected, animal control authorities should be notified. Reports of animal cruelty should be as detailed as possible. Dates, times and circumstances should be noted and related to animal control authorities, who should also be made aware of any physical evidence (photos, video, etc.).

If you witness or suspect animal cruelty, you should contact animal control immediately. Write EVERYTHING down. It is just a good idea.

You can't leave this situation alone! Confront this person in a calm and caring manner. Tell them as nicely as you can that you are worried about the dog. Make sure they know that you aren't kidding when you say that they better take that dog to the vet. If they don't you should insist to take the dog back. If you think about it IS animal abuse and you cannot let it fly right by you! Help the dog in need! Hope this helps!

I was thinking of the Chihauhaus I have seen. I can't recall seeing a Chihauhau that is so thin you can see the bones of the spine through the fur. I think you are thinking of a Whippet or Italian Greyhound. A Chihauhau shouldn't be over weight but it definitely should have some 'meat on it's bones'. And besides, how much money does it take to feed a Chihauhau, they eat next to nothing and there really is NO excuse for one being that skinny!

Do you know where they live or their phone number? Either ask or just go over there one day, checking to see how she's doing. If they let you in the house, secretly inspect it. Ask if you can see where she eats and sleeps. Make sure it's safe and there is food and fresh water.
We don't take our dog to the vet, unless we know she absolutely needs it. She is skinny, but she is a poodle, so it's normal. Um, we get her groomed, too, which means her nails get cut. 1 inch nails...too long. Nail clippers are cheap. I think my friend got some for under $8. They work great.
Just talk to them. If you go over there and suspect they can't take care of her, you should really offer to take her until they are ready.
Don't go over there alone. Possibly bring a male with you.

You need to take immediate action - contact your local law enforcement agency to see if they have an animal control service, if so request that they do a "welfare check" on the dog for poss signs of animal cruelty. If you do not have a local ACO contact your SPCA or rescue group for assistance. There are also alot of groups on-line that might be able to assist with your prediciment - go to Google.com and type in "reporting animal cruelty." If all else fails, approach the owner and offer them a price to take the dog of their hands.

Okay, I was 'with you' until you said that the dog is a Chihuahua. If you are taking 'the best care' of your Chihuahua you SHOULD BE ABLE TO COUNT THE BONES in her back, and her nails should be about an inch long. So, I don't know that these people are 'abusing' their dog, or that you have a 'case' of 'clear abuse.' They could be 'feeding her' just fine, and she has a HIGH METABOLISM (common among that breed) ... but if you 'want to be sure' then call the County or City Animal Control and as them to 'investigate' ... and put your name in as someone who would "LOVE TO OWN THE DOG" if they decide it is being abused, and take it away from them ... the DOG may 'thank you' with a 'lick and a wag' ...

Don't give it to the family's, you finding the dog in that condition tells you they are abusing the poor dog. They had their chance to care for the dog and failed. People that cant raise a dog dont deserve kids, and i would tell them to shove off and call the ASPCA and inform them of the problem and file a report. I would advise to write a sworn statement for when they do their report.

I would definitely call for help, at least for the sake of the poor dog.
If they are unable to care for her, regardless of the reason, then she deserves to be with a family who can. I would want the same for my pets.

You'll do the right thing :) Anyone who would open their heart and home to a stray is already mindset to save them.
Good for you! And good luck!
