I am talking about those prongy training collars. I, personally, have never used one, but have seen them being used on dogs being walked. They look painful. Do they just look this way and really aren't? Am I missing something here?

They are uncomfortable; that's the whole point of them. I would never use one. There are plenty of ways to train a pooch without hurting him.

It is normally called a 'Pinch Collar' I only recommend them to someone that knows how to use the collar. They do not hurt the dog if used properly. NEVER pull, yank, tug or correct hard. All it takes is a short correction and your dog is back under control. I use Pinch Collars on all my dogs and none of them have been hurt, and they are not afraid of the collar. I only recommend one to people with problem dogs (aggressive, bad manners etc) All of my dogs are well behaved, I just use them because I never know what might happen.

No, they are not painful if used properly and can be better for training than a chain collar. The prongs actually put pressure around the entire neck which give you more control. They work best for dogs who pull...when I trained dog classes with the obedience club I was a member of, we would suggest these collars for dogs that were strong and pulled at the leash when being walked. It amazed me how effective they were.

If used properly, prong collars are an effective training device for large breeds and dogs who resist 'milder' collars and pull continuously. The proper use of a prong collar is a quick firm (not harsh) snap and release to get the dog's attention back on the handler. They are capable of inflicting injuries if misused, but then, so is any collar.

they do look like a weapon dont they?
In actual fact, if used properly, can be quite a good training tool.

The idea is that when used in training they pinch the skin assisting in correction of undesired behaviour and according to research can actually be less damaging than a chocker chain (which some dogs will still continue pulling against regardless of the choking sensation and can cause damage to the throat area)

I have never used one myself, but did a bit of research on them out of curiosity more than anything else (like you i saw one and freaked, but wanted to know more before i cast a judgement)

It is vital, if they are going to be used that they are used properly though, so they can assist in affectively gaining desired results without causing damage or pain, they are meant to just cause mild short term discomfort, just as the choker chains are meant too.

They are not painful. Try one on your arm. They are actually safer than conventional chokes which can tighten all the way down. A dog can learn to pull on the prongs just like any collar. Consult a reputable dog trainer and get instructions/fittiing before using one. They can be a great tool.

Far less painful than a shock collar, and far less dangerous that a choke collar. They do pinch a bit, but the tips of the prongs are flat, and can be covered with rubber tips as well.
