hillary wants to pull out of iraq asap. bush thinks that we need to stay there until theres a little more stability. now i'm no bush fan, in fact i hate him, but i think that in order to win this war and make iraq a functioning country we need to stay in.

it's definatly a complicated issue. by the way micheal w it's a catch 22, not 24, but both sides have there pros and cons. if you support the troops but not the war i can completely respect that, it's people like erudite and oreilly that piss me off.

I fully support our troops, but based upon the situation, I think they've done their jobs. Let's let countries that hate us as it is blow each other up and save us the trouble and loss of soldiers...

Our original goal was to find the WMDs. That goal is accomplished...there weren't any.
Our next goal was to have regime change. That goal is accomplished. Saddam is gone.
Our next goal was to bring about democracy in the region. Last I checked, the "demo" part means people. This is rule by the people. We aren't the people. We could have imposed a military rule for a period of time, but we didn't. The time for that is passed.
Now it's true we destabilized the region, and removed the only controls that were stopping a civil war from happening. It's also true that every terrorist organization in the world came to Iraq to kill our troops. As long as we're there, we are attracting a terrorist element to Iraq beyond the Iraqi groups that are fighting each other, but if we leave, there will almost certainly be a civil war.
It's not a good situation no matter what we do, but I don't believe democracy can be imposed on an unwilling group of people, so I think the idea of "making Iraq a functioning country" is not something WE can do. This goal was unrealistic and misguided from the start.
Now I think realistically it will take a year to withdraw, and we probably should negotiate with countries like Saudi Arabia, who have offered to participate in negotiations, to fill in the gap. They have influence from a religious perspective that may be able to be used to advantage.
I personally don't believe this cause is worth American lives, and I believe we have gotten distracted from the pursuit of AlQaeda and other terrorist organizations. We have also abused and drawn down our National Guard, who have been totally mistreated financially and in every other way during this war. We need them to guard OUR nation, not other people's.
There will be problems no matter what we do now, and no matter what great scenario people on both sides of our national divide describe, but I'd vote for getting our troops out as quickly as we can do safely. That would seem to be making the best of a bad situation.

I am a Brit and we also have a lot of troops out there trying to keep the peace. This is a difficult question and I wish that I knew the answer. If we pull out I think civil war will break out. If we stay the killings will continue. Its a catch 24 situation. My answer to your good question would be to keep the troops there, encourage the civil police to make weapons illegal and arrest all people owing guns.until there own police are capable of keeping law and order.II admire the Iraq football team winning the Asian football championship but where in the Western world would you see guns being used to celebrate the event and 4 people were killed with stray bullets. Get rid of ALL private weapons would be a good way to start

It's a hard question that's for sure. Pulling out will look like an acknowledgement of failure, but staying is murder.
A similar thing happened at the fall of communism in europe - opposing factions that had been supressed were given the freedon to fight eachother, I'm thinking particularly of Yugoslavia,Bosnia and the Serbs.
The objective was to get rid of Saddam Hussain - who could forsee the hatred that would be unleashed? Saddam Hussain was a monster and has now been replaced by many smaller monsters. I supported the war, against everything I thought I stood for. I was glad when they destroyed his regime, but it has to stop. so I say pull out. (I'm British if that makes any difference)

We need to stay and finish securing Iraq. If we pull out now, The terrorists will be here, blowing up our buses and trains and buildings. And for those worried about casualties,(and I am NOT belittling the losses we have had!!!), but we have yet to lose the number of soldiers killed in the first FOUR hours of D-DAY!!!! We lost over 2500 men in the first 2 hrs on Omaha beach alone!!!! We lost hundreds of thousands in the four years of WWII. We need to tell Congress to get the HELL out of the decision making process and let the Military do what is necessary!!!!

Actually its over 4000 dead what the whitehouse hasnt told you is how many private contracters have been blown to hell from the side of the roads over the last 4 years. And what Bush wont admit to is the Iraqi death toll of waaay over 655,000 , he just plainly refutes the number as if ignoring it doesnt make it true anymore. Fugging criminal @ sswipes.
Why cant people see that Iraq is a trial run for the takeover of other oil rich countires...and possibly the USA itself!!!!

I think we should get out of there as quickly as possible. People forget that we didn't go to Iraq to avenge 9/11. We have been involving our foreign policies with Iraq for many years, we've established troops there for many years, we have been bombing them for many years, over what? oil? their own civil wars? a vendetta against saddam? well Saddam is dead, their civil war will never end, and gas prices are at an all time high so WHY ARE WE THERE? people fear pulling out will mean that al-quaida will come here. but with out troops all out protecting other peoples borders NO ONE is here protecting ours. We should fear attacks now not when we pull out. They don't want us there, many Iraqi surveys have shown 90% of Them want us out, the longer we stay the angrier they get, the more Iraqis lose their lives and their families, the more american soldiers lose their limbs and lives.. over 3,000 american soldiers have died... the ones severely injured range in the tens of thousands. I am all for trading with other countries but when it comes to our foreign policies I think they all need to be paper shredded.

For starters its the likes of Bush's private mercenaries that are killing the innocents on the streets. Of course thats all designed to infuriate the Iraqis who assume it was Sunnis or Shia fighters who did it. You can find real evidence of Blackwater security troops driving around Baghdad shooting civilians, its all over the net now. Saddam had the lid on firmly before Bush and his oil buddies invaded, now the lid has been knocked off its every man for himself, complete civil war. And while all this is going on the US troops stay behind the greenzone walls and send out private contracters to get blown to hell for $1000 a day. Wouldnt it be great if all the troops got together and demanded the rich *** elites fight their own freaking wars huh?? maaaan Id love to see that happen.

Hard to say. Many Iraqi leaders say we should leave. If they think we should leave do we have an obligation to stay and protect them anyhow?
