Yes. Sometimes the actors follow around other Dr's to see how they do things while they are studying the role. I know for a fact that some of the symptoms and diseases that they talk about on the show are real because I have one of them. Through the course of my studies be it for academic achievement or just for myself, I have come across many of the other ones as well.

I don't know, but I wouldn't be surprised.
I used to work at a state mental hospital, and the Clinical Director (chief psychiatrist) seemed to have an unusual talent for helping patients when nobody else could. Sometimes we would have a lot of problems with a particular patient. He would kind of take over and give them a bunch of different psychiatric drugs--some patients would be on 8 or 10 different things. Then he would make subtle adjustments, discontinue one drug, start another one, raise one dose, decrease another, and eventually the patient would actually improve dramatically, and he would taper it down to one or two medications. I never saw another psychiatrist like him--it seemed dangerous to give somebody so many drugs but he must have known what he was doing.

Well if he was as good in real life as he is on the show, then I hope not. He may not be a people's person, but if i was a dying person, then i dont' really care, i just want to get better. He's good at what he does - doesn't have bed-side manners, but who cares! Do you want a doctor that will make you better, or a doctor that holds your hands when you die? It would be a shame if he was fired, sent to prison or worse yet, had his license taken away from him.

Yes, and hopefully they a better bedside manner and better interpersonal relationships with their colleagues.
A woman doctor I know specialized in clinical genetics. She had many rare and confusing cases. I was amazed at her ability to ferret out rare diagnoses.
Most physicians in practice have had occasional cases where we made brilliant and life-saving diagnoses. Other cases have had signs, symptoms, lab and x-ray findings that led us down the primrose path.
You must realize that for dramatic effect, all the cases on House are complex and full of false leads. We see occasional cases like this, but they are the exception, not the rule.

I know the show is actually based on a real doctor by the name of Dr. House, but I am not sure if the cases are ones that he has actually worked with.

I am sure there is. I mean, are not all doctors detectives? I know that the diseases House deals with have been actual cases by MD's. And they didn't always know the answer right away.
I love house!
