It's 3 weeks (21 days) the first week you may see blood the second week they are ovulating and ready to breed so unless you want her to have puppies, keep her away from other dogs (males) the third week they start going out of heat. You may want to get panties for her at the pet store, while she's in heat. Her appetite may change too during her heat. Hope this helps... All the best;~)

my chihuahua stayed in heat for about 5 days and my vet said that is about the normal length of time.

approximately three weeks, maybe longer, maybe shorter. It depends on the dog. The first week, they won't accept males because they're going into heat, the second week, they'll let almost any male mount them, so you have to watch really closely and make sure it doesn't happen, and the third week, they'll be aggressive towards males that try to get to them because they're going out of heat.
If the reason you're asking this is because you have a chi that might be going into heat, I highly recomend getting her spayed. Chis have some of the most difficult pregnancies because of their size and the size of their pups.
