I work for a mental health agency that provides services for people with mental retardation and developmental disabilities; we have some clients with Turner's Syndrome. Apparently, it's caused by having only one X chromosome or only part of the second X.

One of my cousins recently had a baby with this condition.

Apparently, most people who have Turner's do pretty well--it's not as serious as other chromosome disorders like Down's. They are generally short and have mild learning problems, but rarely have mental retardation. They are usually unable to have children. There is some risk for certain health problems, but most people can do well with regular visits to the doctor.

My uncle was pretty upset when his grand-daughter was diagnosed with this. He and his wife were reluctant to even look it up on the internet; fearing the worst. He seemed to feel a little better about it when I shared some information with him.

Jamie Lee Curtis Turner Syndrome

my daughter was diagnosed with turner syndrome at birth. For her the signs were swollen feet (lymphodema), she had a heart scan at 3 weeks and her heart is fine. As for if your daughter will be a mild case time will tell, not having a heart problem is good although from age 18yrs she will need regular scans to make sure the heart valve does not start to change. Your daughter may have some learning problems these differ girl to girl though and often are quite mild and most girls do well in mainstream school. Treatment involves growth hormone injections to help with growth. estrogen and progesterone is given to help with body changes (breasts etc) and also give a monthly bleed. My daughter is nearly 14yr old now, started GH injections aged 4 and estrogen treatment from aged 11, she was 4ft 6" tall at her last check up which is small for her age but good for a TS girl, she's got a predicted final height of 4ft 11" to 5ft. She's in mainstream school and doing well
