Make sure you drink enough water early in the day, and don't eat anything within 2 hours of your run.....that said, do make sure you eat something earlier than 2 hours out. I get those side pains if I've eaten too close to my run, and when I haven't eaten anything for 5+hours. Make sure you are breathing naturally, in through your nose and out through your mouth. Taking fast, shallow breathes can lead to side pains, too. You'll find a good balance.

Your sides hurt because of a Lactic Acid build up. It basically means that you are not breathing effectively when you are running. Expanding your chest completely and taking good breathes should help alot with avoiding the acid build up.

Another good tip is not to bend over after running to catch your breath. You are closing the chest instead of opening it up.

Try cutting out soft drinks or at the least cutting back quite a bit. When i played basketball my coach told us to not drink soft drinks because they caused us to hurt while running.

Relax the shoulders and breathe in even patterns. I bet you are tense when you are running in an attempt to compete well. Relax and you'll run better.
