My tv wont play dvd subtitles even if i select them in the dvd menu?

This is a DVD player problem, not a TV problem.
DVD subtitles are part of the output video signal from the player

I agree with the TV guy. If it doesn't work in the movie menu, most DVD player remotes will have a subtitle button that will allow you to manually enable subtitles, if they exist on the DVD.
