I went to the Navy job counselor today and he offered me a job as an intelligence specialist.

Please only answer if you actually know what an IS is =P Thanks!

Not everyone who joins the military wants to go to war. That is very stereotypical of you to say. I want to serve my country but I'm not a huge fan of actually shooting people and such.

I guess it depends on where the military is when you finally become an IS, if in fact you actually do become one. Keep in mind that recruiters are going to tell you what you want to hear. They'll tell you you'll be an IS, but then you'll join and you'll end up doing menial work for at least a few years before you even get to start training for the original job you want. Im not just pulling this out of my a*ss either Im in a military family and have grown up in and around the military and know many people who are in the military and it's always the same story. What you need to do is go back to that same recruiter with a document you personally typed up stating that he said you would be an IS and make him sign and date it himself and never lose it. This has helped a few friends get the jobs they really want in the military in a shorter time. As far as going to a war zone in the navy they are more lenient and will usually on deploy people who volunteer, but, it's the military, once you sign your name over, they can send you wherever they want and you can't do anything about it.

Oh and they DEFINITELY would send a woman to war zone, please don't listen to that idiot.

Nobody could honestly answer this question, if they did, they would only be making an assumption. They Navy can't even promise you a job as an intelligence officer, it all depends on how you do in the training program. Think about this, what if you graduated the training program and they assign you to a tactical unit ? Women are serving on the ground in Iraq and other theaters around the world. The recruiter's will promise you anything but , they don't run the fleet. I am not trying to discourage you, the Navy is a great way of life, take it from a veteran of the Marine Corps. They have a lot to offer.

P.S There are no front lines in Iraq, We have women who are Armors ( people who fix weapons) that have come under fire, also supply clerks. If you are in country, you are a target.

those who said you wont go into a war zone dont know what they are talking about, read the news and you would know that the whole thing is a war zone. i've been to iraq and afhgan and had females with me every where i went, as a matter of fact, we have had a female officer die two years ago from an IED. so to answer your question, yes because those so called green zones are not really green. so on paper work it would seem like your not in a war zone but the truth is..........

there are no more front lines/rear echelon. as an IS you face the very real possibility of going IA to the sand Box. By default, that means a war zone. there are also ISs aboard ships, and they can suffer the same fate as the USS Cole.

If you are unwilling to face that possibility, no matter how remote, than don't enlist.

It's highly possible. I was on a team with a navy intel female. And now she works in Baghdad in the Green zone, which gets mortar attacks all the time.

Although there are no guarantees, I would say it is highly unlikely that you would be required to be in the trenches with the grunts.

Your activity will more than likely be aboard ship or in a command center that's not even in-country where hostilities are taking place.

If you are assigned to a unit (probably an HQ) that is deploying to a land base in one of our AO's, then yes. But you will not be assigned to the "front lines" (whatever that is these days with unconventional warfare), basically you'll be in the rear with the gear. If aboard ship, then you'll be pretty safe aboard ship.
