I see those concepts thrown around a lot and I've always wondered what people really meant when they say this.

To me, ''emotionally strong'' means putting your emotions out of the way and think logically instead; not letting your emotions be in control of you, thinking with your right side of the brain instead of the left one when something ''emotionally disturbing'' happens.

I really don't know what is meant by ''mentally strong'', to me, saying someone is ''mentally strong'' is the same as saying ''s/he is smart''.

So my question is, what exactly is meant by ''emotionally strong'' and ''mentally strong''?

well, emotionally strong doesn't mean you totally disregard your emotions, but rather that you are not letting your emotions run your life. you can have a clear mind.

mentally strong holds the same definition from my point of view. just basically having an open mind.

good question.

I have a different take on that.

If you are strong emotionally then you are in control of your emotions, but it also means that you are not afraid to express your feelings.

You have confidence in yourself. Confidence is an emotion too.

Mentally strong means to that you show your intellectual abilities and are able to make sound decisions.

Every decision you make has both an emotional and mental
part. If you make a decision then you must feel confident about the information you have. And to get that information you must feel curious enough to answer the question.

Emotion is a mental state. Feelings are the physical manifestation of emotions, the gut feeling or the chemical changes in your body.

No one is totally rational or totally emotional. You can not separate these from the physical. You are a whole being not a list of names.

Right side, left side brain is just a way of talking about the mind. The jury is still out on this hypothesis and the theory still controversial enough to not draw a final conclusion.

SOME PEOPLE ARE EMOTIONALLY stronger than others. They can take a lot of stress and strain without falling apart, while others collapse into a whimpering heap at the smallest things.

Mentally strong
I'd say life experiences, with personal and moral values all come into play. And your environment to which a person is exposed to everyday would make some difference. There's so many fractures i guess it's really up to that individual to be as strong as they can or want to be.

Emotional strength is the experience of being in an emotionally tough situation, with high stress, and terrible consequences
(relational, physical injury or death, etc.) During this time you are able to feel your emotion, yet it does not take command of your ability to think and speak and to care for others around you.

Mental strength is the ability to think and respond in situations where others become easily confused or bewildered by what is happening and the need to make a proper response in that setting. (Such as a paramedic)

I read these exact two little phrases when seeing a 911 dispatcher job. Mentally strong means that things won't get into your mind and cause you to be distracted. Here is an example when you get a 911 call and a women is crying saying that her 5 kids are all dead that there is blood everywhere. Most people get mentally distrubed by this and want to call there kids to make sure they are ok.
