S My Doxie won't stay asleep?
My 10 month old pup used to sleep in the bed with me. My boyfriend moved in with me 3 months ago and we have started to ween him to his own bed. He sleeps in it but every morning at 5 am he wants to come in and play. If we lock him out he will sit at the door and whine. The past few mornings for an hour straight. How can I fix this. If I open the door he jumps all over and hits you with his ball indicating for us to throw it. My boyfriend says just ignore him and he will learn this is not a way to get attention and he'll eventually stop. Does that sound right?

I have dachshunds, but it does matter because what I am going to tell you applies to all breeds. The dog is training you. It is training you to let it do as it wants. First of all you need to learn about dog behavior and how to train your dog. Enroll in puppy or obedience classes to learn this. You have to be alpha over your dog and the dog understands this, but as I said it is training you that it is alpha. Here is what you do. You open the door, reach down and grab the dog gently by the muzzle, then give a command. Something appropriate in this situation might be, "go to bed". Let me explain the grab. This is an alpha gesture and a mother dog might do this to a puppy that is playing too hard. You are just placing your hand around the dog's muzzle and not grabbing it so that the dog can't get loose. After you do this close the door. If the dog whines again, and it will the first few times, just repeat.

Let him sleep in his own bed, and ignore him until he falls asleep. If/when he starts sleeping in his own bed without whining treat him him with nights when he can sleep in your bed like he used to.

You could try putting him to bed later, but the best bet is to crate train him. The sooner the better

why can't he come in and visit if he is already been sent away to sleep alone in a cold bed by himself at night...
