If you are talking about some kinds of jewelry, they can sometimes provide a clue to your ancestor and his/her life. Rings or pins from fraternal organizations are one example of this. Unfortunately, without being able to see a certain piece, no one can really answer that.
If you are talking in general, jewelry is simply a form of decoration that goes back thousands of years. I doubt that anyone can define an exact "origin", but then persons who deal with history of jewelry would probably say that I know nothing about that. (and they'd be right !) Your best option for that would be to use google for "jewelry history".
If it is a particular piece... you really should just drop by your local jeweler, and just ask for a quick opinion. If he/she tells you anything particular, you can also come back to google and expand on what you are told.

Jewelry can be traced as far back as any traces of civilizations all over the globe. Ancients is Mesopotamia, Egypt, China, Turkey, the Americas, all made jewelry, mostly for the kings and queens (or equivalents). Each culture had its own style.
You can always google it...it is such a broad subject!
Good luck.
