I bought a car from a private seller who desperately needed the cash as he was leaving the country. He told me he had bought it from a friend and it was a paperless title and I just had to take his receipt in to the DMV with the application to transfer the title. Well as soon as I get there the clerk straight away says it was Lien sale and I have to get all the paperwork from the seller (who is now in Hungry incognito) and that is the only way I can transfer the title. There is now one to contact and I have no idea who he bought through, does anyone have any idea what I do in this situation as I cant insure the car as it is not in my name. Help, please please please.

Well....................ask the DMV if you can do a salvage title or a mechanic title on it being as the guy you bought the car from is now unreachable.
Have a sherrif come to a VIN check on the vehicle and fill out the papers you get from DMV. After that, you should be able to do whatever you want.
Next time...DO NOT GIVE MONEY TO ANY ONE UNTILL YOU KNOW FOR SURE THE TITLE IS CLEAN

That is precisely the reason why so many choose to buy from a used car dealer, that way you have someone to sue. As for the car you can not do anything about it, just hope that the guy who sold you the car is going to keep paying his bills, if not lien holder will go after you. Good luck, you are going to need it.

contact a lawyer or try to get a history report on the care with the VIN. you could try the police for the report or there are alot of agencies that do it online but it wont be free. best case schenario you get the last owner of the car and they can help you, worst case schenario you have to scrap the car for parts, take a loss, and use it as a learning experiance. good luck hun, dont worry, it happens to the best of us
