I had a root canal done a few years ago, and I got a porcelain crown put on today...but every time I even tap the crown with the tooth on top I feel pain all the way through my tooth. Also, the left side of my gum hurts and feels like there's a lot of pressure being put on it. All the pain is in turn making my jaw and right ear hurt. Is this normal after you first get a crown put on? Or should I be worried that something is wrong?

Hi! It is possible that the bite needs to be adjusted, however the fact your gum hurts and your jaw as well to your ear tells me a little more. I've been in dentistry for over 25 years and I think the crown may be high, but it does not sit down well on the gum. The swelling tells me the margin of the crown is not correct and this has caused the jaw and the ear to hurt. My other thought may be that the if you have an amalgam filling in the tooth and a non-precious metal/porcelain crown sitting on top of it, you may have a reaction to the different metals. Just a though. Since I don't know exactly what was done, you must call your dentist tomorrows and insist of seeing h/her immediately. Waiting could cause the root canal to fail, and you have more problems then just a high bite. This should have been checked before you left the office with the dentist knowing the comfort level of the crown was proper. I think there may be more to it and needs immediate care. Make sure an xray is taken to see if there is any fracture of the root canaled tooth which would also cause this to happen. If the post broke through the root or fractured the floor of the tooth, this would also cause this much pain and discomfort. Please take care of this right away. If you have any other questions, please ask. Marie

It really hurts for at least a day. If it goes longer than 2 days, call the dentist. I've had it done before a long time ago. It was the worst thing I ever had done by a dentist.

JASMINE,
EVEN THOUGH THE NERVE IS GONE AND OUT THERE IS A PERIODONTAL LIGAMENT WHICH SURROUNDS ALL TEETH AND IT'S APPARENT THAT YOUR CROWN NEEDS A LITTLE BIT OF FINAL ADJUSTMENT TO FEEL 100%. THE LIGAMENT ALLOWS YOU TO FEEL THAT YOU'RE BITING ON THIS TOOTH FIRST.
GO BACK TO THE DENTIST AND HAVE THIS TAKEN CARE OF. WITHOUT ADJUSTMENT THE PAIN WILL CONTINUE EVERY TIME YOU BITE. GOOD LUCK.

Hi. Did you have a temporary crown put on, or a permanent crown? Your symptoms suggest that the bite is too high -- and that the crown needs to be reshaped. Most definitely call your dentist asap, and let him/her know that you need a bite adjusment.

It's probably OK but a call to the dentist won't hurt. They tend to ache for a bit.
