They are so cruel and a grille broke my cousin's hamster's foot. I know I wouldn't want to walk on a grill with bars smaller than my toes and gaps between the bars wider than my foot. Not to mention most of the cages that have these do not provide any place for the hamster to rest except for perhaps the food bowl. what a sad life. All for "ease of cleaning" with a pull out tray beneath the grille.

I think its because people are more at ease with the idea that the pet will not escape. I've known a few people that had rodents in plastic caging, and they escaped by chewing their way out and weren't seen again. It really just depends on the quality of cage you get though.

I do agree with you though, metal wire is not exactly something I'd want to walk on either. I've even heard of it causing something called bumblefoot that affects the rat/rodent's feet and this can be quite painful for them.

Not a clue. When I had to address the plastic-cage-being-chewed issue, I got a wire one that clipped onto plastic, with plastic shelves. My current rat cage has plastic bottom, but wire shelves.. but the gaps are about 6mm, and it's not squares, so no caught feet :) Actually getting 1 with plastic shelves, upgraded room for my "little" baby.

It's definately sad, considering unclipping one from a plastic bottom is not hard. I know some people remove the bottom part, and cover the shelves with lino or something for the rats, although any hamster I've had would've ate lino.. :-/. Let's hope more people realise the wire isn't safe.

They're dangerous & uncomfortable. I wish they would stop selling them. Same goes for cedar & pine shavings as well as all those unhealthy treats with dangerous preservatives, too much fat & sugar etc.
It's terrible that so many retailers are more interested in profit than in the comfort & health of our little guys.
