She is four years old and has just gotten into it. She has another dog in the backyard with her and lots of toys to play with. I know bassetts are inclined to dig by nature, but is there any way to get her to stop? My parents love their dog like another child, but they're talking about getting rid of her because she keeps tunnelling under the fence and getting out. Help!

Do not leave the dog in the yard unmonitored.

It is important that she be stopped the moment she begins to dig.

Clip her nails very short.. make it uncomfie for her to dig.

Block the edge of the fence with something undiggable.. bury fencing (I laid welded wire fencing to stop digging).

Set up a "zip" line along the fence. This is an electric wire that will sting her if she touches it. You can get one for dogs at a farm supply store for about $50-$75... which is cheaper than bailing her out of the pound.

Laying down a foot-tall length of chicken wire flat on the ground around the perimeter of the fence, buried under about half an inch of soil should deter the dog. Also, installing a sandbox and rewarding the dog for playing in the sandbox will help distract her and give added incentive along with the wire.

Build her a sandbox (like a kids sandbox but a little deeper) and bury her toys and treats in it. This will give her a place to dig. Then bury several inches of wire fencing under the fence so she can't escape.

Hound breeds by nature both like to dig and escape to follow their noses.

Best way to get her to stop is to wear her out! She needs long walks and playing outside of the yard. When dogs aren't given something to do and something to focus on they dont know what do do with their energy. I can almost guarantee that a very good walk and playtime daily, without being fenced in a yard will do the trick.

Don't laugh, but I do believe you can buy a pair of dog gum boots, and they can't dig with those on. Good Luck!
