Good thing Gaston County, North Carolina doesn't have a ban on pit bulls, or this man wouldn't be alive this morning.
Steve Carpacca, 41, was asleep in his mobile home at 3:15am when his pit bull ran into the bedroom and started barking frantically.
The man awoke to a room filled with smoke and immediately ran outside. When he realized that his dog had not followed him, he rushed back into the blazing trailer, armed with two 5-pound fire extinguishers, but the fire was already out of control.
Four fire departments responded to the call, and it took a total of 15 firefighters to douse the flames. The dog never made it out; fire crews found the little hero's body in the hall just outside Mr. Carpacca's bedroom.
Mr. Carpacca was devastated at the loss of his dog.
"The dog saved his life, absolutely," said Chief Dicky Harris with the Community Volunteer Fire Department. "If the dog hadn't been in the house, [Mr. Carpacca] would have been overcome by smoke."
It is believed that the fire was caused by an electric heater in the kitchen. Mr. Carpacca never heard any of the smoke detectors sound.

wheeza7geeza you need to get your facts straight, they are not dangerous by nature, its people that use their loyalty and their power for illegal fights and the news never post good deeds that they do and only what will give them ratings. American Temperament Test Society test all breeds of dogs and pit bulls being the number one most tested dog. Pit Bulls had a passing rate of 82% or better -- compared to only 77% of the general dog population. These temperament tests consist of putting a dog through a series of unexpected situations, some involving strangers. Any signs of unprovoked aggression or panic in these situations result in failure of the test. The achievement of Pit Bulls in this study disproves that they are inherently aggressive to people. Now if their the most tested and are one of the highest scores then the general dog populaction whats that tell you. Dogs learn from their owners and the enviorment they are rasied in.
aladdinwa, the reasion there so miss used is becase that they are very loyal to their masters no matter how their trained. They have a very high drive to plz their master and being very stroung. And when we get people flapping off at the gum about them just because of what they hear from other people who know nothing about the breed. Prejudice is all the same whether it is with people or animals, & it is all out of ignorance. You hear a child has been hurt but you never hear that the child is messing with the dog or it it was abused or been trainded illegaly. 75 percent of so called pitbull bites are not pitbulls at all. There are 20+ breeds that are commonly incorrectly identified as pit bulls.. Go here( http://www.pitbullsontheweb.com/petbull/findpit.html ) try and find a real pit bull and i put my money on it you wont find it your first time.

I have always loved Pit Bulls and this story, although sad just shows how wonderful the breed really is. It's nice to hear a positive story for once. I'm actually surprised it made it in the news considering it was a Pit Bull. People usually don't want to hear the positive side of them, just focus on the bad owners who turn their wonderful dogs into something it never wanted to be in the first place. Thanks for a great story, except of course that the dog did die. But it did so with dignity, doing what Pits love to do, be with their LOVING owners.

Yes. I agree that an animal is only as good as its owner. The pitbull is known to be a loving dog, especially with children. The problem is, when they do bite it is much worse than a normal dog's bite because of their powerful locking jaws. This gives them a bad reputation along with the fact that so many people choose to breed them to fight and be violent. People are ignorant and only hear what they want to hear. If they knew the whole story these animals wouldn't have such a horrible reputation.

I can tell you this i LOVE MY PIT BULL. I had a pit bull for about three years until she was shot by a man that had broke in to my home. She is now tattooed on my back with angle wings and says pure angle under her pic. I can tell you if you have never had one then you only know them by what they show you on TV. And that's not how they really are they love there family and a will do anything to make them happy. That's why it is so easy to train them to fight because they are doing what there family wants them to do. Its the kind of person that has the dog that determines how it temper is. I love my pit bull and would do anything for them.

No. It doesn't change my mind about the breed, but only because I own one and I know what a loyal and wonderful breed of dog the Pit Bull is! Thank you for posting some POSITIVE press about the breed. Do you have a link to that article? So sad the dog didn't make it out. There are many stories about Pit Bulls giving their lives for their family and I am glad the news is starting to report about the GOOD that occurs with this breed. THANK YOU for posting this.

Not all pit bulls are bad. I have 2 that are 1/2 pit and love them dearly. It is how they are raised.
I feel bad for Mr. Carpacca. His little baby was definitely a hero and he should be very proud.
I know pits have a bad reputation and that sucks. I believe any dog turns out to be a certain way depending on how their owners treat them. But that is just my feeling.

Because a Pit Bull saves someones life, doesn't make the breed any less undesirable. They are known to be aggressive by nature, and the sort of people who keep pit bulls, are usually the ones who shouldn't. I would think most intelligent animals would do same if there was a fire.It was a shame however that the dog died.

I think the only pit bulls that go bad are the ones that belong to bad owners. I have friends who have pit bulls and they are so sweet. Rather than placing a ban on pit bulls, they should beef up funding to spay and neuter programs and crack down on animal cruelty. That is a great story.

Why does the breed of the dog make any difference to your story? It could just has easily have been a Collie.
If you want to change minds about pit bulls, prove that other dogs can be trained to be just as vicious and dangerous as a Pit Bull.
That's the only way to prove that it is the trainer and not the dog.
Question: If the Pit Bull is not naturally aggressive and vicious, why is it the dog of choice for people who want that kind of dog?

The only reason that a pittbull would become agressive is if its owners did not properly train it...
Pittbulls are sweet and caring and extreamly loyal...they make great pets...for people who know how to handle a dog...
Most of the dog bites are from labs not pittbulls so they are not the meanest...
