My mother in law says you can but that sounds pretty far out there. I can't really afford the costly surgery or another 8 mouths to feed. Any ideas? Thanks!

You need to watch Cesar Milan the Dog Whisperer; he can do anything to dogs! You've really opened up a can of worms here and everybody wants to help you, Blackey.
Besides, little puppies don't eat very much and you can feed them from yourself, just let them take turns, wise guy!

Really, you'd be surprised how inexpensive spaying/neutering your dog can be...it's MUCH cheaper than having puppies! It's less than $100 in my area. I know you don't like the answer, but it's not only the smartest, most responsible, best thing you can do for your dog, but it's also the cheapest in the long run...unaltered dogs can cost you through disease that can be avoided with spaying, can avoid legal and medical bills caused by aggression (much more common in unaltered dogs), and vet bills from pregnancy (especially if it's a difficult one). If it were me, I'd do whatever I could to come up with the money to cover a spay..

Get rid of the dog or the mother in law. She's either an idiot or expects that you are to give such horrible advice! Why don't you talk to the dog about getting a paper route or something to help if he wants puppies while you're teaching him about abstinence?

No, they cannot be taught to ignore their natural instincts about breeding. If you want to spay your dog, but are low in funds, you can call your local shelter, and they can almost always give you the number of a low cost or free clinic. Spaying is the healthiest thing for your dog because it will end deadly diseases like pyometra and ovarian cancer, as well as help prevent mammary cancer and unpleasant behaviors that give the word b itch a bad rep. I am glad you realize that pups are not easy or cheap. Good luck.

Yes, you can. It is a well known procedure called "Getting spayed" or "Getting neutered". Most people complain it is expensive which leads others to believe they shouldn't be a pet owner in the first place.

Nope. Go find a shelter with a low-cost spay program. Look on www.petfinder.com and start checking websites and calling them up to find one close to you.

Youve got to be joking. Can a man abstain either? Same thing.

No but some shelters will nuder for free or don't let your dog near other dogs until he is fixed P.S. FIXing a dog does NOT
change him/her
