If you have a Class III. The rifles must be registered before 1985 (or '86, I forgot), and they tend to cost around $10,000 or more .

Except for MAC-10s, which go for around $3000

Legal Assault Rifles

Contrary to popular belief, automatic weapons are legal in 42 states. You need to have a Class III Tax Stamp which costs $200 for each NFA (automatic, short barreled, suppressed, AOW) you buy and own. This tax is basically saying that you have had a background check and have been approved by your local chief law enforcement officer. The only automatic weapons most people can buy are ones registered before May 1986, when the manufacture ban was created. I live in a Commie state that thinks the Constitution has no bearing on it, so I have no personal experience with NFA weapons, so unless you live in: Delaware, Hawaii, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, New York, Rhode Island, Washington you should go to a local gun shop and ask them because they would know the specifics for your individual state.

Besides for police and the military, they are only legal if you are a Class III Dealer in firearms which anyone can be provided they go through the paperwork and background checks needed by the BATF. The only other way is to purchase them directly after paying their enormous price, $3000 for a MAC-10 on up to $15-$20k and more for various other types. In addition you need to pay the $200 1 time transfer tax stamp to the goverment and pass a rigorous background check. So essentially if you have the money and a clean slate, then you should not have a problem!

YES, In most states as "The List" has already advised. Fully automatic weapons are refered too as machine guns, not assault weapons. As you have already also been told you need a BATF Class III Dealer license to sell one, a complete personal background w/finger print cards on file,be of legal age to buy one, and be prepared to spend big money for the weapon, a BATF transfer fee and an annual Tax stamp to own and possess one. Many states have current assault rifle bans in effect that limit transfer/ownership/possession of any gun that has a magazine that holds more than (10) rounds, California being the worst and most strict of all..........

It is legal in most states with the proper license (arguably, it is legal without the license as any "law" restricting it further violates the Second Amendment and is therefore invalid). But, some states (California, New York, etc) have banned it and you can't get a license there. Also, there is no such thing as an "assault rifle".

If you get the license and don't mind spot checks with the BATFE showing up at your house for surprise inspections once a quarter or so, you can get one.
As a point of trivia, only one such rifle has ever killed anybody, when an off-duty cop on his way home from the firing range with his M16 ran into a shootout following a bank robbery quite a few years ago. He had to kill a robber.

You mean machine guns and sub-machine guns.

Yes they are legal if made before the ban.

You have to pay a $200 transfer tax and have them registered with the federal government.

Depends on the state. If it is legal in your state then you pay a couple hundred bucks to the BATF, they do a background check that is incredibly instrusive, and then you can purchase the firearm.

excelllent question.so many ignorant fools have it hard wired into their brain that all full automatic weapons are illegal and evil.Liberal media. As mentioned, If you jump through the proper hoops they are.And I don't think there is a set law on hunting with automatics.bullet caliber perhaps, but I don't think there is a specific rule against auto hunting.good thing,That would ruin my battle strategy against the spider monkeys using a micro uzi!(for all the retards I'm kidding)
