Great Question. I think that would be a YES.

I think that religion produces too much pressure on their followers, without enough stress relief. Being a walking, talking display of a religion that is intolerant of so many things is tough. Say you are Gay who is hiding that fact from the rest of your congragation. How would you get relief from those urges, maybe use a child who you could frighten into silence??? More hetrosexuals abuse children than Gays

Being forced to shun a child because your religion doesn't like the lifestyle your child chooses. This really imparts the idea of family, when you are splitting up a family because of something that really isn't anyone's business but your childs.

Ya, being saved and not responsible for anything that disrupts the status quo of the church is tough to deal with. Enjoy!

It is my considered opinion that society is mentally ill because of television and the media in general. We are influenced by it to a much greater degree than anyone realizes. If you are the least informed about 'subliminal' and techniques of mind manipulation and "neurolinguistic programming" , you can easily see just how insidious an influence it is if you pay attention. people actually base their whole existence on "TV values", and thus come to grief in this way. Religion as it currently stands is no help at all. Unless people free themselves from the insidious snare of media mind-programming and learn to develop greater relization and independence of thought, they are headed for DISASTER.

Though it's politically incorrect to the utmost for any academic to even insinuate that religion is a form of mental illness, it undoubtedly is. Though purely a psychosomatic one--one that one develops rather than is born with. (Though they're certainly born into it.)

The average devout religious person believes that the universe was created with him/her in mind, that his/her thoughts are being listened in on, and that when they die they ascend out of their physical bodies into a kingdom beyond the stars.

You'd be hard pressed to find delusion as fierce as that in even the most notorious of loony bins.

But since religion is so incredibly common, it's not usually considered.

'Mentally ill' is a little extreme, but I will say that society as a whole is unnecessarily guilt ridden due to religious beliefs.

I don't think religion makes people mentally ill, but it does prevent society from raising to a different level.

It is people who use religion for the wrong purposes that are mentally ill

Depends upon which religion.

Jesus came to heal those who need a renewed mind. But like any illness, if you don't go to the physician, it's unlikely that you will be healed.

Yes, and I find it very sad and frightening that so many people can depend on fiction as a way to continue and progress through their life. It's pathetic, and obviously there is no way to stop the madness. All we can do is just sit here and let them self-destruct.

No, but a lot of mentally ill are religious.
