And for that matter, why does anyone want to be branded this way..if they don't have to be...I notice, and I am not trying to be mean,..that for instance, when a child is a brat, and they need to have a spanking,...there are about five different diagnosis' for them...a mental illness of some sort, when in the old days, a good whipping would have stopped it then and there...I see people here, who have fears, things they dread, so on and so forth..but because greedy shrinks want that almighty dollar, they have everyone wondering, "What's wrong with me?"..there is a diagnosis for everything...anyway,...Why is this,...or is it just a sign of the times?

"small minded people"..like me...hmm...Iet's see...my son was diagnosed with OCD so bad, that he has to be on medication for the rest of his life, but it does help him..now as far as truly having problems, my heart does go out to you, because like my little autistic nephews child, it is a terrible thing to have to deal with, because truly, it isn't their fault, or the parents, and it is very sad..but I am talking about the fact that kids cannot be 'spanked' any more, because of some stupid laws..and as a result, have horrible behavioral problems...then a doctor diagnosis it, when in fact, all they needed was a whipping..I am truly so compassionate to children, and make no mistake about it..

Poison Ivy, no prob..I can see why you would be on the defensive..it is a hard thing to deal with..no mom wants to see their little kids like this..it is heartwrenching..but you love them dearly...it is devastating to some families..but I see no need for greedy physciatrists however, to put a name on any way a child is acting..when it is usually normal.. I am sorry too, if I hurt your feelings

most parents DO NOT want their child to be diagnosed with a mental illness.. (if they do.. then they themselves are mentally ill).. I think the problem you are leading too has nothing to do with the parent and everything to do with the school systems... If a child is a "busy body" then they have ADD or ADHD and whammo.. on a drug they go so that the teacher and the school have a much easier time with that child...
I also believe that too many parents are being conned into putting their child on a drug to zombify them... maybe they are told that the child won't be allowed in school or perhaps even being taken away for "neglect" .... IT HAS HAPPENED..
lastly... there are children who truly do have a mental disorder and need help... but that percentage has certainly been inflated by eager medical professionals who make a tidy sum on these people and the school board who want to make their lives as easy as possible..

how do you know the kid is just being a brat and needs a good spanking? I agree that many children today are overly diagnosed with various mental disorders, but as a mother of a child who truly has one, it's the small minded people like you that think all kids who act a certain way just need a good whipping that really piss me off, my children are disciplined and yes when they need it , they get spanked, but that does not mean that that's the only thing wrong with my son, he has a REAL medical condition, and needs treatment for it , it runs in our family and unless you have a child dealing with a mental disorder, which I'm assuming you don't, you have no right to pass judgement on anyone else.
edit:
okay, I misunderstood the question, I agree that parents need to take back control of their kids. but too many people see my son when he's having an "episode" and look at me like I'm a bad mother because of it, so I do tend to take offense easily.

Problem is 2 tiered. First revolves around professionals not being adequately trained and not spending enough time to get an accurate picture of what is going on with the kid in various environments. (Inaccurate picture=misdiagnosis=imporper or unnecessary meds)
Second revolves around inconsistent monitoring and shaping of behaviors. This starts at home with the parents but continues with the grandparents, uncles, aunts, teachers, grocery store clerk, school yard attendant. A child must be taught right actions versus wrong actions. If he is doing right and is ignored, he will resort to another action which may then be punished. Child then doesn't know what is right to do since no one praised him when he did the right thing. I could go on, but I think I made my point. Good luck!

I don't want to be labeled with anything but them I am who I am and being bipolar is not something I can change I need my meds and the label is what gives me the meds so that I can stay stable enough to live a normal life. I don't want a label for my daughter but being ADHD is what she is and I can not change that. to people that say its because of lack of discipline or anything else negative well if that was so all my 4 children would be the same but it is only one of my children that has ADHD and an underlying mood disorder. we can not control our genes and if they say you will have bipolar, ADHD or any other genetic disorder there is not much you can do about that. like how tall you grow or what color eyes/hair you have your genes are your genes and that's all there is too it. OH and by the way my daughter is not on meds I think she is too young for them.

Please don't be afraid to go to a doctor. Therapies keep improving all the time, so by the time you're ready to adopt, your problems may be a medical non-issue. But whether that happens or not, you can only benefit by getting good medical care as early as possible. And who knows, there may be a fairly simple and fixable cause behind the hallucinations. Why suffer needlessly? Go see a doc and take care of this. Your future self will thank you.

most parents do not want their child to be diagnosed with a mental illness. i think there is some truth to some of what you are saying, but it is unfair and uncompassionate to the people that are really sick and need the help. the doctors get rich because people are lined up to see them, no one is forced to . i worked with the mentally ill for many years, and mental illness is a very serious problem that does affect a lot of people.

Some parents just want their kids to be put on drugs so that they don't have to deal with a normal high energy child. What they really need is to get away from the TV and be provided with ways to expend excess energy like sports/outdoor games. These parent need to realize that being a parent requires that they actually parent, not just keep a child alive.

It's the lazy convenience mentality. Your kid giving you problems? Why go through all the hard work of actually dealing with the root causes of their behavior when you can just give 'em some happy pills and make them nice and compliant that way?

Parents probably just want to know that they aren't the ones wrong or raising their children wrong so the try to get them diagnosed so that they feel better about themselves and they can say that there was nothing that they could do about it.

I agree with Spinchic even if she wears pink glasses.
The generation having children now can't stand the idea that they may be parenting wrong!
